: key buzzer in dash???

I have disconnected the horn relay because I was told (and I read) that the key buzer is located within it. I have not heard the buzzer since.

Yesterday I started the car & the buzzer would not stop buzzing. (relay still disconnected) I shut the car off & had the keys in my pocket & the buzzer kept buzzing, I had to disconnect the battery to stop it. Is there a buzzer located IN the column or behind the dash?

The column is not original to the car (tilt) so it may be from a different year car. Is there a year that had a buzzer in the column?

not sure what you disc. on the relay, but there is a small wire that plugs into the relay, cant remember if it grounds or what, but it works the buzzer-thats all you have to disc.- maybe its touching something, shorting out-you might look around for that

If the key buzzer is disconnected and the buzzing is still coming from the horn relay, sounds like you need a new horn relay.
If the sound is not coming from the horn relay, you need to track it down.

The wire that activates the buzzer at the relay is black with a pink stripe on it. When unplugged the relay will not buzz to remind the driver the key is in the lock assembly. There are also a set of contacts in the column that close when the key is inserted into the lock. Both the lock cylinder and the contact assembly can go bad causing the relay to buzz all the time or not at all.

On a 72 the key warning buzzer is located up under the dash. The dash harness has a group of wires that include the signal harness connection wires, the ignition switch wires, brake light switch wires, neutral safety/back up switch wires all group together as a branch off the main harness. The warning buzzer is attached to that branch, the connector wires are orange and pink/black stripe.

I'm not sure that it's a 72, I assume based on "72 ss 454 "w" code M22 w/cowl induction #'s matching :hurray: second owner" that it is.

The key buzzer switch is located in the steering column at the base of the ignition switch. Take the steering wheel off, remove the lock plate, turn signal switch and you'll find it right above the release wedge for the ignition tumbler assembly. See thumbnail attached. The length of the switch goes into a little square hole and what sticks out are those two long contacts. Grab the switch with a pair of needle nose pliers and simply pull it out.

Now if you leave that switch on your work bench when you reassemble your steering column I promise you you'll never hear your key buzzer again.

the funny thing is that I think that piece IS on my workbench.
But I did notice the other day when I was nosing around that my turn signal lever is loose & when I move it around I can get the buzzer to stop buzzing, so it comes apart saturday when I have more time.
