: Trunk Spatter Paint

Clueless

Does anyone have a recommendation on where to buy and what type of spatter paint for my trunk? I just finished welding in new pans and would like to spray the trunk with something thick enough to hide the seams, as well as, add a little sound deadening.

All the major parts suppliers carry the spatter paint, both the grey/white and grey/aqua. I believe you can get it at your local GM dealer as well. I bought some from a vendor in Nashville and it was GM stuff and good quality.

Just make sure you put a good base or sealer in the trunk first because a few guys I know ended up with rust problems due to moisture later on. Even after you spatter paint the trunk you might even consider clear coat over it.

Don't consider clear you must put it over spatter. Laquer clear coat. If not, it will turn to slime if water gets on it.

Being that you are clueless, let me remind you also to make sure you find out what color spatter paint you need for your car...I don't believe you mentioned the year car you have?

I have a 66 chevelle. I sealed the trunk with seam sealer then sprayed the entire trunk with Eastwood's Corrorless Rust Prevention. So, is the next step to spray the spatter paint and then apply a laquer clear coat?

Yes, that will work fine. Make sure to get enough spatter paint, however. It does not cover very well or quickly. You will need 3-4 spray bombs at least to give you adequate coverage in the entire trunk. Then make sure to clear coat it when it is dry. If it is humid, it could take a day or two to dry sufficiently before you can clear coat it.

I found the spatter paint (grey w/white speckles) at a local paint store for $10 a can. Can I get the clear coat in a spray can or do I have to put it on with my air gun? I hope the guy at the paint store can answer all of these little questions, however, you never know who you are going to run into when you walk in some of these places. Thanks for all of the advice.

Important note Clueless, the final sealer coat will have to be flat/satin finish, not a glossy clear. I redid my trunk recently and used a Krylon product.

Good luck.

From my experience the spatter paint does not cover as well as you would like and especially over the corroless. If I were you I would prime with a grey primer over the corrless and then use the spatter paint and then the satin clear coat. I think I used about 6 cans of spatter paint for mine.

You got the wrong color....

65 was the last year for gray/white

You need black/acqua if you want it done right.

Better think about that color? My car doesent have no black spatter and I still see the original gray. Anyway 3 cans to do the job. You don't spray it on like lard ust to cover.

Clueless,

Definitely prime over the Corrorless. I learned the hard way - the trunk paint doesn't stick well to it.

I started painting over the Eastwoods cooreless only to wipe it off.

Scuff the Corrorless with 400 then prime with a sandable primer. Sand the primer lightly with 400 and lay the spatter paint - also try to do on a dry day - humidity will lengthen the drying time by days - I experienced that as well.

Hope this helps.

(Gee - I wonder if Greg 65 SS noticed how much help this flagless member is getting http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif )

Okay, not sure if you even care about correctness, so maybe this is just all in vain., but since Brenden said think about the color, I thought I would just share abit more.

I did make a blanket statement which was not clear, but maybe I can add to the confusion with the facts I know.

Each original trunk area received a factory base coat of flat black. then over the base coat was a top coat of "Spatter Paint" For 1966 Chevelles the spatter used was Black/white and some got Black/Acqua.

The 1967 Chevelles received Dark Gray/Acqua.

If someone has a 66 with the Gray/white, it may be possible, though I have never seen any survivors like this, ( have seen many incorrectly restored like it though) that it is a VERY early 66 in which case the 65 trunk spatter was carried over to that particular car. Plants were always using up supplies in early production model year.

But from a Judging standpoint and this is just for those who care, I would go with the Black/Acqua or Black/White.

So seeing gray in a 67 trunk would make sense, and aging makes everything look different than orignal.

Again, always exceptions to the rules.

Good luck

Thanks for all of the help guys. Sorry for the late reply, I have been busy over the weekend getting my motor started and asking Bob Tiley 10,000 questions. After doing some checking, here is the process I am going to do: Sand the Corrorless, Paint w/ sandable primer, Sand the primer, Paint with spackle, Paint w/ flat-satin clear coat. I guess I will go with the Black and Aqua, since I have heard a 50/50 on what color to go with. Thanks from a "Non Flag" member.

You might want to check a company called Zolatone, they make a line of "spatter paints" that are supposedly extremely durable. I plan to use the black/aqua in my 67 SS I'm restoring.

Guys,

For what its worth my 66 SS has a build date of 0308 and the factory spatter paint combination in it is Black/aqaua and was redone by the original owner of the car. He told me some time back that this was the correct spatter color for my 66. Hope this doesn't cause any other doubts or confusion.

Not at all Dwaine...if anything, that just supports the facts....some 66's got Black/Acqua...others got Black/White.

Where did you get that type build date from?Trim Tag, usually a Month ( 03 ) followed by a Letter (B) for week., but I know you are aware of that, no offense.

Thanks Dwaine....keeps the facts moving in the right direction.
