: 3" exhaust opinions
mxracer Oct 27th, 06, 8:26 PM i have a appointment weds. to have my exhaust installed.i'm thinking of going with the flomaster 40 series in the stock location and then just turn them down at the rear of the muffler.[no tail pipes] has anybody done this or any comments ? gary
1968Chevelle300Deluxe Oct 27th, 06, 8:32 PM havent done it but it will make it a little louder which is a good thing for muscle cars.Because the exhaust do not have to travel longer by curving it down it will make it louder trust me i have had mine on a rack before with no exhaust what so ever just straight headers and its not that loud so by curving it down towards the ground it will echo making it twice as loud as straight exhaust.
mxracer Oct 27th, 06, 10:15 PM i figured it would be louder but didn't know if fumes would be an issue or not.gary
68bye Oct 28th, 06, 1:22 AM I had dumps on my 10 sec street Olds. They sound really tough because they echo against the ground. You'll only have problems with fumes if you have holes in the body (rust, drilled holes, etc.) I never had an issue with mine. Another plus with dumps, you set off ALL KINDS of car alarms with the vibrations they make. I actually made people park in there driveways rather then the street because they were tired of hearing their alarm go off.
Yep and when ya floor it, all the road dirt/dust blows all over your car and makes it look like your burning oil.(don't even think about a dire road)
Not to mention when your sitting at a long stop lite, no fumes there?
Something to think about.................

69-CHVL Oct 28th, 06, 8:58 AM 3" head pipes, 3" muffs, 2.5 tails is the way to go . Consider an X if your gonna run a restrictive muffler
53Chev Oct 28th, 06, 11:07 AM i ran a flowmaster kit with 40's all the way from the headers to the tailpipes. I have a 350 and cant BELIEVE the difference it made. Not to loud definately loud enough to change the way people look at my car compared to before.
I'd say go for it but use 3 inch pipes straight out at the back, it makes it look a hell of a lot meaner then turn downs.

I second this !!!
You will smell fumes with the dumps behind the mufflers. How about running tails and turning them down just behind the rear wheels.
Garry
cuisinartvette Oct 28th, 06, 1:10 PM 3" pipes wiht 40 series?? Bring some earplugs. Even with pipes all the way out the back my ears would ring after a freeway cruise, the resonance was annoying. Sounded great at idle and WOT though.
stick Oct 28th, 06, 1:31 PM I am running Flowmast 40 center in center out and have them turned down at the muffler. I have had them on the car almost as long as I have had the car. Yes, it is louder, both inside the car and outside. No, I have not had any issue with smelling fumes inside the car, atleast not at this point and right now my carb is off so I am running a little rich. For looks, I have thought about putting in the rest of the pipes to the back of the car, but I can always add them later if I decide to later.
EXTREME Oct 28th, 06, 7:10 PM I'm running the same setup you're describing. 3" Collector, 3" back to 40 flows, H pipe, dumped after mufflers/before axle. Pics and video below. Like stated above, forget going thru dusty areas, dirt roads/areas (shows ect.) I made the mistake of running over that oil dry after it had been put down at a gas station, big mistake, i looked back and people were getting in their vehicles cause the cloud was so big. BUT i love the sound!!!

I recall something from Flowmaster about their mufflers needing at least a short extension to work best. I think it was 14" minimum for 2 1/2" mufflers, a little longer for 3" ones and a little less for 2 /14" ones.
ak 67SD Oct 28th, 06, 7:32 PM i run 3" with dumps... it is loud and raises dust! i like the loud, dont like the dust and fumes from the rich carb ... i wanted to go 3" all the way to the factory exit location, but the installer got half way and said he couldnt get it over the diff, just a crappy installer, one day i'll get it finished or do it myself with mandrel bent tubing... i've seen some street cars with 4" to the back... really mean... but these are 1000+ hp cars... 3" is worth it! but i'd go all the way back...

Ron H Oct 28th, 06, 7:54 PM Unless you're making over 400 HP I don't think you need 3" dia pipes. And 2.5 inch would be a little easier gong all the way back and over the axle. I have 3" Flwomasters with one series quieter muffler than the 40s (either 30 or 50 .. I forget) . I have a crossover too. They go all the way back and exit a t stock location. Looks real good. 3 inch system can make it over the diff with not too much trouble, Son and I installed them in one day but not lots of room to spare. We welded up all the jopints a few months later. I haven't had but I have a friend with the turn downs on his '69 as they call it right after the muffler, and he says there's quiet a bit more noise into the cabin than my car, and more exhaust smell.. Slow cruing traffic??? My guess is your going to inhale a lot of fumes. It'll be a blast either way ...but I'd consider these comments before you commit.
GRN69CHV Oct 28th, 06, 9:58 PM Currently have 2.5" all the way back with 20" case turbo mufflers. Think we decided, my motor needs a lot more exhaust. Most likely going to change to 3" head pipes, set of 8"x5" case - 18" Magnaflows and keep the 2.5" tails. May go with an X if I get ambituous enough.
70 beater Oct 29th, 06, 8:03 PM I've got 3" 40s dumped before the axle and I'm tired of the noise.Sounds good outside the car,I'd bet it's louder inside with the resonance, if you're driving it everyday like I am it gets old.Was going to put my 3" Flowmaster tails on this weekend but it didn't happen, they are a perfect fit when I mocked them up.
ChevyMopar Oct 30th, 06, 3:44 AM Bud ive got exactly what your wanting except i have a X- pipe 3'' and 40's dumped, sounds very loud very good with my 350 and my 454 that i put in it. BUT! you might have a problem, its going to vibrate and shake the interior big time if you dump it at the axle.
theclencher Oct 30th, 06, 11:48 PM Isn't maximizing the interior noise a good thing?
mr 4 speed Oct 31st, 06, 6:45 AM I'm happy with 3" headpipes from Pypes,10+ year old Flowmasters and 2.5" Flowmaster tailpipes w/stock tips.
riskyvt Oct 31st, 06, 8:13 AM Here's a couple of photos of my Flowmaster 3" kit, with H-pipe and Super 40's, traditional tail pipes exit up and over the axle in stock location. This is all strapped to a MPFI 540 BBC that should see first fire in about a month or less. Yeehawww!

Chevelle 6-71 Oct 31st, 06, 11:06 AM The best way to do 3" all the way back IMO is to buy a kit. I had a very hard time finding anybody around here that could bend 3" stainless without cracking in or turning it in to an oval. I had a 3" Magnaflow system with x-pipes & dumps put on the other day. I have had the Flowmasters and dumps at the axle and it sounded bad azz but at cruising speed they are loud. The 3" are nice but $$. If you do the Flowmasters diff do an x-pipe.
