We need to take the doors of my son's 70. Was told to remove the hinge from the door(easier to realign) but I'm thinking of pulling/cutting the pins out as I want to replace the guide rollers(what I'll call them for lack of knowing what they are) anyway. Do you think this is a good idea? The fenders are already off so they are easy to get to. Thanks Pete

if the fenders are already off, just scribe around where the hinges mount to the cowl for a reference, and with the door closed remove the bolts holding the hinges to the cowl. While someone removes the last hinge bolt stand with your waistline against the door skin and hold the door at the door handle and front of the skin. When the last bolt is out just press the door handle button, open and carry away the door. You can also do it with the door open and balancing on a floor jack, but the first method works best for me if the car is apart and not painted. If the car is already painted you may want to do the jack deal with a rag on the jack so the paint doesnt get scratched.

I did this on my 70 with great results.

With the fenders on the car still  I pulled the doors off the car via a ice chest with pillows on top of it (and lots of terry cloth towels) supporting the door while I unbolted the hinge at the door, not the body.

I then was able to leave the hinges on the car while I used a grinder to cut the factory crimped end off the pins and popped the original pins and bushings out and replaced them using the same method.

After slight door alignment they close like new again, well worth the effort smile.gif

I did exactly as drptop's first description and it worked for me. I did one by myself (my back!). I got a friend for the other one. I recommend a second person.

If the doors are aligned correctly and the only reason your pulling them is to repair the hinge, then knock out,or cut the pins out. Remove the door, replace the bushings and roller if needed, replace the door and put in new pins. This keeps from having to readjust the door. Its easy this way,i did it by myself with no damage to the freshly painted doors in about 30 minutes a side.
