: Deck filler replacement: How To
supersport396_2000 May 21st, 02, 7:33 PM When you cut the piece out between the trunk and rear window do you: Cut at the seam, or do you try to separate the filler panel from the quarters along the seams?
Would it be best to just cut in the weld then but weld the new piece to the qtr, then weld it up.Then try to cut the seam into it with a grinder?
Has anyone tried to make the sides going up the side of the rear window yet? Mine are gone and i'll also have to fab that area, lol,me fab it,thats funny.
Thanks,
68racer May 21st, 02, 8:31 PM i replaced the filler panel on my car. the the sides of the sail panels where also gone. around the area where the back glass goes. what i did was go to a junkyard and cut that upper portion of the quarter off of a junk 69.
when i had the filler panel and side of the quarter out it was fairly easy to weld the seems together. on the other side i cut the filler panel off right at the seem and butt welded it together.
if you are interested i can try to borrow my dads scanner and send you some pics.
i see your in danville i have heard there is a guy in bedford that has a bunch of junk chevelles maybe you could find a car and cut that piece out to repair yours its not as difficult as it sounds.

sevt_chevelle May 21st, 02, 8:46 PM Replacing the rear filler panel is fairly easy. Just drill out the spot welds on the window channel and the gutter channel where the trunk seal goes. If you crawel inside your trunk you will see the seem were the filler panel welds to the quarter. The easiest way to seperate that seem is by taking a cutoff wheel and grinding the spot welds. It would be so much faster and easier and better to replace the filler panel at the factory seem, as with any panel...Eric

supersport396_2000 May 21st, 02, 9:02 PM I was going to weld at the factory seam.I just didn't know if i should try to separate the parts or just cut it straight through at the factory seam.
68racer May 21st, 02, 9:43 PM it is not that difficult to seperate the filler panel from the quarter the best i remember there are 2 spot welds. i only butt welded mine because the right side was in good shape but the left side was gone.
someone stripped about half the car and put some spray can primer on it needless to say it didn't have much corroision protection.
