When replacing the complete trunk on a 65 do you remove the rear filler panel? I need to replace gas tank supports also and they are sandwiched in between.... It looks to be alot of work to get the filler panel out.

Not exactly sure which filler panel you're referring to. I've done several `65 trunks and tank supports. Can you be more specific?

The panel that fits in front of the rear bumper. It looks like the gas tank support is sandwiched between that and the trunk.

If it's the panel I'm thinking of, it's the sorta "V" shaped looking panel that the gas tank support bolts hook in to..no you don't, . I wouldn't cut anything out until you have the pans in hand to see how far you need to cut. if i were to replace trunk pans again, i would butt weld them right on that corner at the back where the pans start to turn down...if you need to clean the inside of that, you have plenty of access to it. If I'm talking about a whole different thing let me know.

Nope, thats the one. The only thing I am worried about is getting the old gas tank braces out and the new ones in.

Dont whack that panel out of there!! That supports the rear half of the car. YOu remove that and the trunk floor and braces you will have a mess on your hands, trust me.

Why not remove the floor, once you have the panels in hand, then remove the braces. Fit the braces to the old remaining floor and rear panel also before you cut out the old braces trace their outline so you know where they go. Once you have them fitting right just screw them down with sheet metal screws. Then test fit your trunk floor and continue to trim til you have the fit you like. Once that fits to your liking then screw those in place to the braces and surrounding metal. Once all srewed down remove the screws and remove the floor. Now you can weld the braces in. Once welded, place the floor back in and srcew floor back together, the screw holes will align the floor up to where it was before. Now weld the floor in

Ok, that makes sense. So I guess I dont have to stick the gas tank brace back in between the panels like the factory. Just cut them off flush, fit the new and weld those. Correct?
