: Cheap Primer ok ?

I went to a locale paint distributor for one of the major brands. I thought the price was exceptional. While the paint he carries is brand name and a registered distributor, the brand of primer he gave me is not from that company. It seems to be locally made. It probably saved me over $200 from a major brand name.

I bought 1 gal. of self etching primer/filler (+1 Gal Catlyst)

and

1 Gal 2K Catalyst Urethane Primer/Surfacer with 32 oz. 2-K Activator.

+ 1 Gal Laquer thinner.

The place was booming with business from local paint/body shops. I had to wait in line. That could be both good and bad.

Should I have opted for the epoxy primer? What would that have gained me over what I have? I am still trying to make up my mind if I am going to try to spray the color and clear coat, or if I am going to spring for a pro to do it. I have never painted a car before.

What I am worried about, is what if I put a lot into a pro and have cheap primer cause me problems? Should I worry? Should I take it back and go get the name brand stuff?

This debate has been hashed out on every forum on every subject. It really comes down to how much CAN you spend and how much for think of the project you are working on.

While doing a "driver" that isn't a "special" car, why not save a few bucks?

But if it is a rare car or particularly valuable, why save a few bucks for a less than top of the line product.

Then again what if this not so special car is YOUR special car? You may want to spend the extra bucks for top of the line.

What brands did you buy?

You mentioned what would I gain from buying expoy? If you bought expoy instead of self etch to apply over bare metal you gained the experience of not having to restrip your car. Expoy in my opinion just isnt the stuff you want on bare metal, bad experiences. Self etch has so much better corrosion resistance then expoy and better adhesion.

Hello guys, Hey eric you and I talked before on the epoxy primer subject before, I must say so far adhesion has been good with the dplf. I had to grind some off to do some welding and thats some pretty tough stuff. I followed the tech sheets and so far so good. I just noticed its been getting a bad rap lately. I not a professional like yourself and dont have as much experience with these products as you but I have a hard time believing that its an inferior product. What does the paint manufacturers have to gain by putting out substandard products and claiming otherwise. By the way please take no offense to this, it just scares me when I hear stuff like that after my whole car is in primer(money, time). If I did it again I would do just the etch primer then the surfacer because its a lot cheaper thats for sure. Thanks again.

Moe I remember talking to you hows that elcamino coming along? The reasons I say what I say about dplf is becuase Ive have one to many bad experiences with it. One includes restripping the entire car only after two months of being shoot with dplf40. Iam not the only one that has problems with it, but I have had some good ones. Ive had several PPG reps tell me that dplf is not the same as dp even tho they claim it as. Why...simple it makes them money. If it comes back to haunt you, they just claim that you didnt apply it right, been down that road before.

Some people love it and never had a problem with dplf, am just saying that Ive used it and had many problems with it. I stopped using the stuff and my problems stopped as well. No offensive taken and none giving...Eric
