: Carb or Ignition... Your Opinions

I called around town here for advice on which avenue to persue on getting my issue resolved.

http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149106

One guy seems to think it is my carb,

the other guy which seemed like he knew more about what he was saying said it is ignition/electrical.

I told him that when I press the gas, gas is shooting into the carb. He said if I was him to start a process of elimination. First by replacing the coil. He said since the car starts up right away after it dies, that the coil may be getting hot, and the few second that it is off is enough to cool it to give me a few more seconds. He said from there check, the resister if there is one, etc, before I rebuild the carb.

Do you think this is a logical approach or is it a fuel system problem?

Thanks,

Scotch

I read the entire thread.

I'm betting it's a sunken float in your carb.

If that's not it, it's an ignition component, and if you've got HEI, I'd bet the module is the culprit.

To an experienced engine guy, this would be figured out in 10 minutes. I suggest you find an experienced engine guy. It's such an obvious and easily repeated problem, it should not be hard to find and fix...it's just really hard to diagnose on an internet message board, compared to opening the hood and being able to check stuff out.

Find someone local to help you out, and you'll have it fixed in no time.

The car doesn't have HEI, and I would love to take it to someone to look at, but I am at work, and when I get off, no one is open. So I am on my own to fix it, at night, in the dark, with a flash light. Using that as the setting, what would you suggest I try first.

Did you read this thread, sounds like he had problem similar to yours.

Could be a fuel or ignition problem, just going to have to eliminate one thing at a time. You say it starts and runs okay, but dies when get on the gas? Low float level? Bad accelerator pump?

I read all of that thread you posted, where it turned out to be a valve spring. The thing is, when the car is running, it is smooth, and sounds great. When it is driving(and not dying) it is strong, without any miss.

If I tap the gas(goose it), then punch it, the car will take off in a hurry, but that puts me over most of the posted speed limits. If It sits and idles, it will die after about a minute. If I try to floor it from a stand still, it will die. One note though. This morning, I didn't give the car its usual warm up period, I just started and drove. It drove perfect for the first mile, then the trouble returned. I think something is getting hot and then stops functioning.

Sounds like an air/fuel mix or carb problem. Choke stuck? Low fuel level in the float bowls?

I had a problem like that a couple of times, rough idle and stumble, hesitation and bogging when I stepped on the gas pedal. Electric choke was acting up and not opening because of a loose wire at the 12V source on the fuse block under the dash.

I will check the wire. I am not sure where the positive lead goes, but I don't think it goes to the fuse box. However I did knock loose the Stereo wire from that fuse block about a month ago, but the car kept running until now. I will check and see if this is it.

In anycase, anymore suggestions are welcome. I am gonng try them all.

How do I check the fuel level in the bowl on the Carter carb, looks just like an edlebrock.

Not sure about Carter. I have a Demon carb with glass sight windows in the bowls for setting float levels.
