I helped a friend paint his 62 impala, we painted and clearcoated the roof first the 2 weeks later we masked out the roof and painted the body. when we removed the mask paper after the body paint setup there was marks and what seems like a residue marring the roof clearcoat. when you try to wet sand it in gums up the paper and a crystal type residue is on the paper. we tryed wiping down the clearcoat with dx33 cleaner and it seems to remove it but when it dries it shows up again. We are stumped as to what is causing it,our first thought was that the mask paper left a residue behind but now i am not so sure . the clearcoat was mixed correctly because there was no problem with it untill it was masked out. Has anyone heard of this before,Any ideas? Thanks

The clear coat wasn't activated for some reason. Bad situation.

Was it old hardener?

we used the same clearcoat and hardener for the body. dc4000,dch3085 with no trouble. The funny part about it is the masking paper did not stick to the clearcoat nor was there a residue on the paper.

I've seen paper and plastic bite into fresh clear, but it can be wetsanded out. I just painted a front end on a van and basically had the same problem with the front bumper, used all the same products and sprayed at the same time. The front bumper sands as you describe but will not buff, like it is not dry.I thought I left the hardener out, but the van itself is fine. Wish I could help, but I'm stumped also.
