: 454 4-bolt vs. M20, value comparison...

I have a Muncie M20 that was rebuilt with unknown mileage, but inside looks GREAT (no teeth chipped, etc).

A fellow member was asking me about a trade for an early '90's 454 4-bolt main shortblock (Standard bore, 10/10 cast crank), #215 heads (stock untouched) and an aftermarket dual plane intake...

The Muncie is just a "spare", and I have two others (and only one car for them), so it wouldn't be a big deal to get rid of it (except I am a Pack-Rat).

I don't really need another engine, but the 4-bolt/standard bore interests me.

I currently have 2 454 2-bolt short blocks, a 396 long block and several 396/402 bare blocks...

While the Muncie takes up less space, I have thought of selling off my other 454s and 396s (assuming this 4-bolt block isn't cracked, etc)...

Sorry, too long...

I'd keep the muncie. getting hard to find. 454's are more plentiful

I am leaning the other way, for a few reasons:
1) as I get older, my knees are aching, and I look forward to an automatic (although both current Chevelles are still sticks)

2) I tend to break things by banging gears (without letting off the gas)... As I get older, I am getting tired of having the car down. What little free time I have would be more enjoyed driving rather than wrenching. I like wrenching, but I prefer driving.

3) swapping in a 5 or 6-speed is easy, if i wanted to go manual again... Or an Autogear Muncie Supercase, etc...

The ONLY reasons I see to keep a Muncie are the lower cost (mostly because I have it already) and for "authenticity" when restoring a car to "stock".

I was looking more for a typical "value" of the swap...

What is a Muncie M20 worth? I see them alot for ~450-$550...

What is a 454 4-bolt short block worth?

What are #215 heads worth?

Will the #215 heads work with the 454 (without "custom" pistons, estimating 9.5-10.o CR)...

Thanks

Tony, I take a look at online classifieds and ebay to see what the going rates are for parts I`m looking for or selling. Right now there are 2 M20`s on the SF craigslist for $400-450. Of coarse there is another for around $650 and another for $800 but i think it includes a bellhousing and clutch. M21`s are usually alot higher. As for the 454`s, I see 2 bolt mains from $100 up to $750. 4 bolt mains usually start around $300 or so and I`ve seen them go to $1000 but the higher dollar ones usually are complete running motors.

The heads are usually around $200 or so for cores and I`ve seen ready to bolt on ones go for $250-$500.

yes the 215 heads will work on the 454 with standard shelf pistons. Speed pro has a .095" dome and it`s around 10.1 and they also have a hyper piston with a .100" dome with roughly the saem compression. They are basicaly LS5 replacement pistons.

Good luck on your decision:thumbsup:
