i'm planning on a custom rear spoiler for my chevelle fabricated from heavy gauge aluminum sheet.i want to paint it to match the car.can i use etching primer and then another type of primer over it before painting?thanks.

In the boating community, the proper way to paint aluminum is to first scuff it with a scotchbrite pad, then treat it with alodine. After the alodine is dry, you shoot a coat of zinc chromate on it. Zinc chromate is that yellow paint you see on airplanes alot, on the inside surfaces of the wings, fuselage, etc. After that, I'm guessing you can follow with your favorite primer and paint, using regular steps.

Just a little warning...
Alodine and especially Zinc Chromate primer can be hazardous to your health. Use the proper precautions.

Bow tie - s/w makes a product called vinyl wash that I was sceptical about -seems to work well and is easier to spray and costs much less. ;)not all "etch" primers work on alum.
