well after 5 months of ownership my pristine sportster is not lookin so hot!. I on the outher hand faired rather well taking into account my (lack of ) safety gear. I ended up w/some road rash , sprained wrist, damaged pride , soiled underwear, the bike is pretty jacked up (broken risers , dented tank , tweeked front fender , many scraches.....ect. ) im sure it will be in the shop for months , i guess that gives me time to get back to playing w/stuff w/ 4 wheels. Next on my list....MC safety class and a full face helmet!

Ouch! Not to mention a little dented pride. Been there. A little learning experience, to be sure.

Bummer :(

It's amazing how fast it can happen. Then when your head hits the pavement, things happen alot faster.

Lots of ice on the sore spots, and a couple of beers on ice should ease the swelling...of your pride that is.;)

Good luck

Glad your okay. When I was younger I decided motorized 2 wheelers were not for me. I think most bikes are cool but I'll stick to 4 wheels. Best of luck recovering for you and the bike.

Do you remember any of it? From the time I left the seat of the bike, the next thing I remember was laying on my back on the shoulder of the road with some guy standing above me while I was staring straight up at the sky.

My bike actually fared pretty well compared to me, I had a pretty good sized concussion and a bad back. Glad you made it, care to tell us what happened?

thanks for the kind words guys. i was out for a ride w/my buddy who had just gotten his 84' flh out of the shop on fri . i was not really planning on going riding but he came by so we took off ( i usually dress for riding if i know im going for more than a putt downtown , so i just had jeans , short sleeve t shirt , novelty 1/2 helmet and vans on my feet) We were on an old road that runs along the river . i was up front coming into an s curve. all of a sudden a huge dragon fly smacks me on the left side of my face, i react by turning my face to the right, then when i look up im coming into the curve , i slow and start to turn but then realize im going to have to take it a bit wide, but........being that this is an old country road the sholder is ROUGH . next thing i know i hit a chunk of road thats missing , the front end shoots out, the bike goes one way , i roll the outher. all in all it could have been alot worse somebody must be looking out for me, but like the saying goes i'd rather be lucky than good

all of a sudden a huge dragon fly smacks me on the left side of my face

Reminds me of when I got a bumble bee in my mouth while going 60 mph on a small country road... sure makes you lose your focus.

Glad you're ok. Just heal up, fix the bike and go on.

It happens to us all. My last time was 8 years ago. Still have the scars from a rebuilt knee to prove it. You'll get better quickly, but now is the time to start thinking about upgrades on the bike ;)

Sorry to hear about your get off.

As far as the bike goes, have an estimate done by a shop, then take the insurance check and fix the bike yourself. You'll save yourself a load of cash.

I wrecked my bike in January of '05. I don't remember actually going down, it was just like "webfoot" described. I thought I was dreaming when I woke up in the middle of the street. I couldn't even remember having gotten up that morning.

I was approaching an intersection with a stale green light. As I expected, the light turned yellow, so I squeezed the brake lever, and the next thing I remember was being loaded onto a backboard and put into the fire truck. I had locked the front brake on some ice, and tucked the front end when it caught traction again. I was found about 120 feet from the skidmarks, having slid all the way through the intersection, with the bike another 100 feet further up the road.

I ended up with a ruptured eardrum, a moderate concussion, some road rash (despite my gear), and a bruised hip. Had a bad headache for about a week afterwards.

Got hit in the helmet by a bird! Almost knocked me off backward no wreck but almost. I run a windshield now (putting it back on tomorrow:D :D ) and face shield. That windshield saved me when an ice chest flew from the back of an 18 wheeler and smacked it and kept on going.

37 years riding so far. Mini bikes to a road racing championship and now dirt bikes through the woods every Sunday. Why you guys won't wear a decent helmet with eye protection (face shield) is beyond me. I have a helmet collection with battle scars all over them. Face shields that got ground down from crashing on pavement and impacts on the rest. I know helmets don't look right on Harleys (I fight this with my Harley buddies all the time) but who cares! I think that if you don't wear a helmet you shouldn't be allowed a wind shield in your car either. 8^)

Ouch! My last wreck was 19 years ago when I lost the bike in the gravel. A pretty gentle turn, hit the gravel, and the bike slid out. I've been getting a little paranoid running without a shield and I have a big trip coming up so I just ordered a new bike.

Brian-

Glad to hear you're OK...the bike can be fixed, not so with some injuries! I purchased my very first motorcycle this summer...A 1997 Yamaha V-Max found on Ebay. I got a smokin' deal and the bike is a hoot to ride. Being a rookie operator I know I need to pay attention 1,000% of the time. I also understand a bike flop is inevitable.

If you're gonna' buy a helmet now, just remember - don't spend more for it than you think your head's worth.:p

Our instructor at the MC safety course said the same thing about people waiting to wreck. I have news for him, I don't plan on wrecking. Now, I watch out for other's more than anything, that's what I worry about most...careless people.

Glad you are ok and the bike can be repaired. Take care.

Glad you are ok. You can alway fix or buy another bike. I've watched a lot of huge bugs explode on my windshield. Glad I got it. Wrecks don't always happen because you aren't watching. Stuff happens sometimes. Can't help some idiot doing something crazy around you. My wife and I rode to Sturgis in 2005 from here. Just me and her. We stayed in a town south of Rapid City with my aunt. We were riding towards Pringle SD doing 75MPH with her on the back. Headed towards Sturgis and then back through Deadwood and the black hills back to the house. Back tire blowed out at 75. Pretty squirrly. Fishtailing. Slower we got, the worse it got. Swaping ends doing 90's in the road at about 20 mph and we went down. Tip: Do NOT hit the brakes if you get a flat. Coast to a stop. Someone pulled over, called my cousin and he brought his truck. Hauled it to Rapid. Got on it the next day, looked at my wife, and said "get on". She got on. Surprised me. Told her so. She said if I could drive it, she could ride it. She's a keeper.
Safe riding to all.

Been riding for 25 years with no "major" incidents, but I've been through ALOT of close calls. Generally speaking, most accidents are not the fault of the rider, but of the American drivers who are too busy eating, putting on their make-up or talking on their cell phones! I just recently sold my 68 Camaro and decided to ride bikes again for a change of pace, this is my newest hot-rod, and she's ALOT faster than my Big Block Camaro, mid 10's in the quarter mile! :D:D:D

I don't plan on doing one of those either. I would like to see a destruction derby, haven't seen or been to one since I was a little guy.
