: rust
70chevelleintulsa Aug 16th, 04, 10:29 PM Well just recently bought a 70 chevelle ss project car
I got the home the other night and started stripping paint and found a rust hole that is 10" long and 5" wide and thanks to the good old bond-doe crap that spot was unnoticeable, so what I need to find out is if a spot like this can be fixed?
And if so what am I looking at in cost to have a body shop patch something like this?
the main problem with this rust spot is it is located on the fastback area by the corner of the trunk next to the back window and I have pictures if you need to see them?
Another question I have is the bottom of my chevelle has surface rust all over it but the good thing is none of the rust has eaten threw the metal or the frame, but I’m needing some ideas on how I can get this rust off?
Do I need to take it and have it sandblasted or what?
What would you do in this situation?
And what am I looking at in cost to have the rust taken care of?
gburden1 Aug 16th, 04, 10:39 PM I would have it media blasted , there is place south of town that does good work at a good price, then you can see what youve got.

soccerguy045 Aug 17th, 04, 12:18 AM Be careful of Blasting Specialties, I think it was. Somewhere like 55th and close to 169 I think. They chewed up my cowl tag pretty good and looked the other way.
70chevelleintulsa Aug 17th, 04, 11:14 AM do you have the name to this place that does media blasting? and what is media blasting if you don’t mind me asking? And by any chance do you know what I would be looking at in cost to have this done? all I need is a ballpark number thanks
also do you know of a good body man that can cut out the rust and replace it?
I got three good spots that need to be cut out and have a piece of metal welded back in it’s place thanks again

70chevelleintulsa Aug 17th, 04, 3:13 PM Thank you sir
I got one more question
I am needing the right & left fenders and a center console for my 70 chevelle SS it’s a standard four speed anyone know how I can get those and at what price
Randy Mosier Aug 17th, 04, 3:49 PM It sounds like you're fairly new to this hobby. Many of the parts for our cars are being reproduced and can be bought brand new. This is true for the fenders and the console. You need to stock up on catalogs from the reputable suppliers like Year One, Ground Up Restorations, National Parts Depot, Original Parts Group, and the newest, True Connections.
Media blasting; it's a process that is similar to sandblasting, but they use a softer material to prevent warping the sheetmetal. They use either finely ground walnut shells or plastic. Sand gets too hot when it's used for blasting and it causes the sheetmetal parts to warp.
JC70SS Aug 17th, 04, 4:01 PM I would get the fenders only through goodmark. Look on their website www.goodmarkindustries.com (http://www.goodmarkindustries.com) and look for a distributor so you don't have to pay shipping. It is not cheap. For the center console for a 4 speed it will cost you about $250-$300 for a new one. Original parts group is the cheapest right now.

If it is, the guy who did that is the Michelangelo of Body Filler- 10 inches long and 5 inches wide and its unnoticable- WOW! Id bet pics would help for better assesment. With that kind of rust, I hate to say it :( , be prepared for more.
BlueSS454 Aug 17th, 04, 10:48 PM I had to completely restructure that area on both my Chevelles. Both corners were cut out and some new sheetmetal was fabbed up and welded in place. It can be done by a good body shop. I would definitely have it blasted to find all of the other problem areas.
70chevelleintulsa Aug 17th, 04, 11:17 PM the guy who had it welded a piece of sheet metal over the spot then bondoed it real thick, well the sheet metal has rusted out
