Battery in the chevelle died last night, and its too inaccessable to jump.
Can I just take this thing out of the car and try to charge it with jumper cables?

Yes but it will take awhile to charge it from a running vehicle at idle.

You CAN but not the best way to do it.
It's hard on an alternator to use it as a battery charger plus it would take quite a while and probably cost 4 times (in gasoline) as much as taking it somewhere and paying them to charge it up.

Im probably just going to give it a shot because its convenient. Do I need to follow any special procedures other than normal jumping technique?

Nothing special, just get the polarity correct. Where did you buy the battery and how old is it? if it still under warrentee the seller would probably charge it for free to be able to properly test it. Then if the battery is bad you can bring a new one home

Beats me how old it is, It came with the car and I bought it. So if for some reason It does get goofed up it will give me a chance to get an Optima batery.

Now you are heading in the right direction :D An Optima battery would be my choice as well.
how can it be in such a location that its easier to remove than jump?...and, if its staying there, i would make up a special set of cables, smaller clamps or angled or something, chances are, you'll need them again, at some point.
btw, i thought the alternators job was to charge the battery

He probably means the car not the battery.
