: why cant i get rid of my wheelhop
BowtieAaron Oct 22nd, 06, 1:22 AM hey guys.
im getting so fed up with this suspension on this car. ever since i put the muncie in it, i have had nothing but wheel hop. broke the old rear, and cracked the frame.
so, i went out and bought adjustable upper control arms, lift bars, and even put air bags in the coils for helpers.
the pinion angle is set +1 degree, where angle on engine was -1 degree. so that is within the 1.5-2 degree's as per directions say.
i am running 15lbs in the bags, was running 20 and dropped it to see if it would help.
im running 30 psi in 275/60 kelly super chargers (yup bias ply)
i had welded the frame up, also.
i just cannot figure out why i still have it.
anybody got any good ideas??

rianbechtold Oct 22nd, 06, 6:53 AM I've helped a few of my friends swap th350's and th-400's for m-21's and m-22's and have run into the same problem. Weird thing is, their cars were fine before!
The only trend i've seen is that cars are different! I've found that giving the pinion angle additional degrees downwards will sometimes cure it (that pinion angle changes the second you step on the gas. If say your springs are soft, you're going to have a greater change in the pinion angle) Other times it is play in the new bushings.
What material bushings are you using, brand/style upper control arms, type of lower control arms, sway bar, spring height and rate? All of these can cause it.
philbay Oct 22nd, 06, 7:39 AM I know "how" not why..... Ladder bars work for me,and also Edelbrock anti hop bars have been mentioned here before also with great results..
This thing is not jacked up is it?
When the car is sitting on level ground, what angle would you say your upper control arms are at? If they are past level and point upwards (from rear to frame going forward) this will contribute to wheelhop.
You don't have coil spring spacers or air shock do you?
BowtieAaron Oct 22nd, 06, 1:07 PM people are telling me my springs are to tall. they are the only things i did not replace. and i belive they are too high. i am running a 275/60 tire on the back, and i have room between the top fo the tire and the wheel well.
the bars i have are the Jegs lift bars, and the Jegs adjustable upper control arms with heim ends. lowers have poly's. and no i dont have a swaybar.
i had zero problem with the powerglide, and its only been since i put the muncie in it.
no air shocks either, i have Gabriel Ultra's on the back.
i just ran outside and looked, and yeah, the upper arms are pointed up a few degree's.
i guess a sway bar, and new 2" drop srings all around will be ordered.
thanks.

Keith Tedford Oct 22nd, 06, 1:41 PM To keep the stock suspension from wheel hopping with a 4 speed, the top of the wheel well needs to be about 1 1/2 inches above the top of the rim. From the pictures, yours is way high. A lot of people don't like the tail dragger look but it is what works for me. Lower the front end too and you end up with a somewhat decent handling car, especially if you have sway bars front and back.

That will give you wheel hop. Stock height springs should be good. I'm not sure you need to get 2" drop springs.

Both mine were setup like this and no wheelhop, autos though.
BowtieAaron Oct 22nd, 06, 11:39 PM thanks guys.
well i have always wanted to lower it, and also make it handle real good, but also be good at the track.
as jim knows, i live in the mountains, so its alot of fun winding back roads.
thanks again.

Brettd85 Oct 25th, 06, 10:41 PM Wheel hop is gone! I finally did a nice launch and some good spins. You guys were right. I cut off about 1/2 a coil off the rears. People say you cant do that on 68 and above, but it works fine. I found that the perch up top is at a slight angle, so if you rotate the spring in the right position it fits nice. It fits even better with weight on it as the spring angle decreases. I am happy with cutting them just like I did in the fronts. Thanks for your help Derek69ss.
