I'd say go Detroit Locker or an Eaton with 800# springs, although the 800# Eaton can be very irritating on the street especially with street or even semi-street tires, it will behave almost like a spool in tight turns.

How good is a detroit locker for turning? Like road racing??

I have a 33 spline Eaton unit with 800lb springs right now, I want something stronger. I am going to sell it for something else.

Scotty, IMHO, I think you are well past the design limits of an posi unit on the market today. With a 1000 HP on tap, I don't think any posi will live too long. If you already have the eaton unit, I'd keep it and plan on a rebuild every so often or go to a spool. Not a whole lot of choices with that much power. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

I have a Detroit Locker installed in my Strange S60 Rear End with 35 spline axles. I dont know how it would behave road racing. I have yet to experiance any problems making turns on the street, no chatter or wheel pop. I do make my turns rather slow.

Are we talking carrier? Which one is that?

Eaton, moroso brute strength, and strange carriers are the same as far as I know.

My concern with a locker, Is I ahve never owned or driven one. I am afraid that is a high speed turn if I give it throttle and the inside tire spins, the diff will lock up into posi during the turn. This could be dangerous!

Anyone know the power rating of a Truetrac or similar?

Sorry to hijack your thread scotty :) .

cmt,
How do you like that S-60?
Ive been seriously thinking about getting one this spring.
Maybe upgrade to pro gears, support cover and locker.

A locker can be "interesting" on corner exit especially if you aren't smooth on the controls, but if the chassis is setup right a locker can work well on a roadcourse. That being said I much prefer a TruTrac on a roadcourse, it's far smoother.

Detroit usually says about 600hp for the Tru-Trac, but that's if you tell them you have drag use in mind. A friend has been running one for a couple seasons now on a 725hp 2500 lb road race '66 Stang with a Jerico crashbox and the TruTrac is doing just fine.

My earlier recommendation for an 800# Eaton or Locker was just based on your question of "what's the strongest posi" and not "what will have the best track manners." The Tru-Trac just isn't quite as strong because of the multitude of smaller diameter helical cut gears but it will have the best track mannerisms IMO with the Eaton coming in 2nd.

Thanks for the post Scotty. I just put a 30-spline Eaton in my car this year. It has worked great, but I'm looking to bump up the power into the 650 hp range next year and was worried about whether it will hadle it on hard launches (drag). I will watch here with interest, and hope you have some luck finding the right combo.

The guys at the race shop that installed my Eaton where saying they had heard of a new diff. called Yukon that has had great reviews. Not sure if thats the company name or the particular model name. They voted for the Eaton cause they used them for years with great results, but said they were watching Yukon w/ interest. Hope that helps...

Your eaton will handle more power then your axle.

The true-trac was highly recoomended to me by Detroit, and Randy's ring and Pinion. It is nothing like a detroit locker and you can not feel it lock or unlock. A detroit locker is not what you want for that application, they lock and ratchet and when you turn its, like having a spool. The true trac is like having an open diff untill the power is applied and there is a torque diffferential. So far I love mine, It's unnoticeable on the street, and has handled transbrake launches on slicks. After breaking spider gears in clutch types, and a few phone calls, I went with the true trac, so far I love it.
Eaton and Moroso told me the gears would break in their diffs, I tried a spool which was ok, but burns all 4 tires off street driving. Anyway, my vote would be for the true-trac.
