My compressor is a 5 hp, 35 gallon rated at 9.1 scfm@40 psi.Not sure about the delivery in the. 20-30 psi range I realize that there are guns this compressor cant keep up with. Is there a reasonably priced one that will? Thanks

The Devilbliss finishline series, or a Sharpe Cobalt are both excellent performing HVLP guns priced around $160 maybe even cheaper on Ebay.

I have a Devilbliss finish line II gravity fed HVLP and absolutely love it. It came with two tip sizes, and you can use the Devilbliss cup liners which save a bunch of time when cleaning.
I think Devilbliss has a new finsih line gun out now (III)

Both the Finish line and the Cobolt require MUCH more CFM (the "V" in HVLP, "Volume") than that compressor can provide. You would be VERY disapointed with either one. The Finish line requires 11.4 CFM and the Cobolt 13.9!
I don't know what to tell you, a Sharpe Platinum is my favorite gun and it requires 7.5 CFM at 50 PSI. I would assume your compressor can do that at 50 psi.

I just got mine in the mail today.
Sharpe Platinum 3013. It was $250 from AutoBodyStore ... Or, around $230 at various other internet sites.
CFM was one of the reasons that I went with the Sharpe Platinum. My compressor is actually bigger than your's ... and I was still hesitant about the other guns.
P.S. If anybody from Sharpe is listening ... it seems that all hobbiest try the Cobalt 1st, and then find they don't have the CFM. Seems like there would be more of a hobbiest market in a low-CFM Cobalt ... at the attractive $110 price.

The Sharpe Platinum looks like a good recommendation with the 7.5 CFM. This gun comes with either the 1.5mm or 1.3mm fluid tip size.
I was wondering about which size would be best. Sharpe's website indicates 1.5mm for Medium Solids Colors and Clears, and 1.3mm for High Solids Colors and Clears. What does this mean?
Edit: I just found Neal's other post about the Platinum gun and tip sizes with the link to his Dr. Gun question http://www.chevelles.com/forum/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=010291 . Other responses seem to indicate either size would work, but there seems to be some preference for the 3013?
Thanks guys, my compressor is rated at 7.1scfm @ 90, so the Sharp Platinum should work fine.

I found some recommendations for tip sizes for the Platinum with specific recommendations depending on paint brand and type of paint. These recommendations might be useful determining whether you want the 2015 or the 3013 gun.

I decided to buy the 2015 Platinum because it looks like a better choice for the PPG primers and single stage paint that I will be using.

I had both the 2015 and the 3013 when I was reping. I picked the 3013 for my personal use and that is what I have today. You can get the 3015 or 2013 as well I believe. The 20 or 30 stand for the air cap a 2000 or 3000 which can be swapped from gun to gun. The 15 and 13 of course stand for the 1.5 or 1.3 mm tip and needle. I prefer the 1.3 for most jobs.
