I have a '71 Chevelle 2dr. It currently has a TH350 with a 9" tailshaft in the car. I have a rebuilt TH350 with a 6" tailshaft. Did the chevelles originally come with a 6" or 9" tailshaft. My thought is If I put the 6" in can I just find a stock driveshaft for the swap or will I need to get the shaft I have lengthened?

To the best of my knowledge, only pick up trucks and full size (Impala, Bonneville, etc.) came with the 9" tail shaft. I know for a fact that Chevelles came with 6", having put in dozens of them. I may even have a drive shaft floating around for one.

By the way, the only way to correctly lengthen a shaft is to completely swap out the whole drive shaft tube. I cringe when I hear stuff like this because I get flashbacks of seeing a spliced driveshaft in a car. Rear end housings, too! I know this is probably not what you ment, I just wanted to clarify.

Hey Quake, I thank you for your concern!!! You are absolutly right I don't want driveshft flying through the floor. Like I mentioned before I have a "71 chevelle with a TH350 and a 9" tailshaft. I don't want to go to the expense of having the whole tube replaced so I was curious if the stock shaft was for a 6". Thanks a million for the information. Now if I can just get you to send one of those driveshafts to Colorado!!!!!

Well, lemme make sure I have one, first. I have the big three sitting in my driveway. ( Chevelle, Nova, Camaro) I'll send you one if I have the right one. I wouldn't want to bet that the Camaro or Nova shaft will fit.
