Working on a '67 malibu with manual steering. I really don't want to change to power steering but hoping for a low buck way to make the steering a little quicker but yet not require super human effort to turn. thanks for any help.

There really isn't a cheap way to do it. I heard some of the early vette's had quick ratio manual boxes but they would come at a high price. The 5 turns lock to lock are a lot of fun in parking lots. I drove a 68 Camaro with manual steering and it drew the attention of a few passersby watching me crank on the wheel to get it in the space :D

Damn Physics!
When you reduce the number of turns, the effort increases dramatically. A larger steering wheel can help.

IIRC there is a kit for the Ford unibodies referred to as the poor man's power steering. Lock to lock count and box remains the same, but the idler arm (at least) is redone with needle bearings, making it easier to turn. It might be something to look into.
Personally, I prefer power steering.

Many older full unibody cars and some others usually had a hydraulic ram type power steering, to keep stress off the "frame". That might also be worth looking into if you want to keep a manual box. It still needs the pump though... R&P is another option that way. Either can be expensive though.
