My 72 has M21 w/ 373 (26" tires). 3000 rpms @ 60 mph. I would say NO.

What if you have an OD transmission in front of the 373's

With a 700r4, 200r4,TKO 5 speed or any other OD, you would be o.k.

I ran 3:73s for about 10 years behind a TH350. Highway RPM was high, but I still liked 'em. Now I haVE TH700 I think the 3:73s are a great fit.

A 3.73 with a Tremec or any .6x overdrive is perfect.

Depends on you. I had a sbc 350 with a th350 and 373's. This setup revved fairly high, but I didnt mind revving my 350 that much. Now I have a tko600. Much better but my 350 doesnt quite have the torque i need at lower speeds. Once I get my stroker it will be perfect with overdrive. Lots of torque at lower rpm. I say if its a small block dont worry about it. I also had pretty tall rear tires.

For highway perfect, freeway sometimes a little tough.

I have a 350/350 w/3:73`s also and love`m but keep it under 60 pretty much all the time. I don`t worry about speeding tickets any more.

something more along the lines of 3.42 or 3.31 would be better unless you're planing to put in an overdrive also ......if you like to drive in the fast lane even 3.31 can get old after a while....( Disclaimer ) I am not recomending you exceed the posted speed limit ;)

You guys crack me up

Almost every late 60's, early 70's z-28 and plenty of Chevelles, including my Heavy Chevy, had 3.73 gears in them. Most of them were daily drivers, who could afford an extra car ? My Chevelle and my brothers 73 Z-28 made the trip from Maryland to Boston at least 3-4 times every year to visit relatives and we never had a problem. Back then the speed limit was 75 for most of the trip. Never hurt either one of those engines a bit.

I will agree with you on that Bill. My L78/M22 68 Chevelle had 4.10's in it, RPM's where quite high but never had a problem with the engine, but gas was less than a $1 a gallon back then :D
