: Body mount on my 67.

I had to cut one of the body bolts on my 67 when I took the body off. I'm almost ready to put it back and need to repair this mount. It's on the driver side just behind the rear wheel. When I order this thing, it ask left or right, which is it??? This has always been a puzzle to me.

The other thing is those damn spot welds. I bought one of the cutters from Eastwood but it is slow going!

Then there is the welding in of the thing, I guess I will borrow my buddies 110 tig or mig machine a teach myself how to weld this type of metal and have a go.

Anyone know how these small welders work, are they good enough for this???

First, the Drivers' side is the Left side. Think of it as if you were sitting in the car.
Second, Did you cut the nut out of the body when removing it? It appears by the post you did, that's probably not the best way to remove that, although if you've already done it, there's not much you can do about it. So if you did, you will have to weld the nut back in, and those small 110 welders' should work just fine, the metal in the car is fairly thin, so you'll just need to remember to turn down the power to the recommended level, that should be printed on the welder somewhere.

I had to cut the bolt, it spun when trying to remove it. That brace has some rust, the only thing under the car that is rusted, so I'm in the process of replacing it. Thanks for the reply.

Those spot weld cutters are meant to be used in a high speed drill, check to see if any teeth are broken off the cutter. A good tip for the those things are before you start drilling with that, drill a small pilot hole about 1/8" but dont go all the way though.

It's turning into a CF trying to get all the spot welds cut and that brace off. There is a fair amount of rust in this area and it's going badly. I think a stick of C4 might solve it!

Wally, the same exact thing happened to my '67 on the same side, must be common on our north eastern cars. My mount was pretty solid, so I made an access hole thru the trunk (which in turn required some trunk work) and fabricated a new caged nut (I think you can buy them also). I have a Lincoln 110 mig that works real good, I think your find that a 110 will work fine for what you need done. I also have two spot weld cutters that I got from eastwood, do you have the one with the replaceable cutter and the spring loaded tip? They make another that will cut the whole spot weld out, it's made from one solid piece of high speed steel, I personally don't care for it. The one with the spring loaded tip is the one I ended up using for everything, I found that just center punching the spot weld works pretty good. Also running a wire wheel across will make all them welds show up a little easier, it's a pain to find them all.

Good luck,
Steve

Yea I also had to replace mine. I cut a flap inside the trunk just above the nut, then welded a new nut on, then laid the flaps down and miged them. A little grinding and you can't tell.

The side is eat out of the brace. This is strange, only this is rusty, the other is solid as is the remainder of the floor. I'm going to need a little patch in the wheel house as well, nothing left at the bottom where it attaches to the brace. Man I hate body work!!!

A little update on the repair.

Now I know why I hate body work! A welder I'm not, you should see the ugly blob welding. Upside down welding is an even bigger pain than I imagined. I drilled some holes from the trunk side and managed to get about four good solid tacks.

I hope the body weight will help keep the dog in place. If I had this to do again, I would have left it alone until the car could go to a shop and paid to have part of the trunk and that brace replaced.

What a pain in the a$$.

This is Chevy country, on a clear night you can hear a Ford rust!

I know what you are saying Wally, I spent about two solid months under my car welding, grinding, sanding, etc. upside down. What a total pain in the ass.
