Hey everyone,

A buddy of mine is looking at a 71 Chevelle SS car. I think the VIN might have been replaced. Are the factory rivets supposed to be installed from the bottom up (so the star shaped side is facing down)?

Tony, on my 70, I think that they're installed upside down also. I've got to pull the dash pad this evening, so I'll check to make sure.

The rivet heads are underneath on mine, and it's original. If it's got the star shape or rosette rivets, I'd say it's legit. Is the car apart so that you can check the firewall for a partial VIN to match the one on the dash ?

Thanks Steve!

The car has the rivets installed the way you describe, so that checks out. I really want to check behind the heater box for the hidden VIN but it's a real pain in the ass with the front clip on. My buddy is pretty stoked about the car so I think he'll buy it either way.
