1BLACKHARLEY Oct 17th, 06, 6:17 PM my stepdaughter calls today, she went to get the oil in her car changed, the guy asks her if she wants high mileage oil? she says yes, after the change, he hands her a bill for $70, she calls me, i ask the guy wtf? he says high mileage oil cost more, i say "not $10 a f-n quart!", he lowered the price to the regular rate. incredable........$70 for an oil change in a honda civic, not on my watch partner....
furball8994 Oct 17th, 06, 6:19 PM Sounds like Jiffy Lube!! Did they really put the oil in?
1BLACKHARLEY Oct 17th, 06, 6:20 PM dealer.....
justkyle Oct 17th, 06, 6:24 PM When I get my oil changed at my mechanic they put in 7 quarts of Amsoil and it costs me around 80 bucks. 7 qts at 5.99 a qt, 1/2 labor at $64 hr, and a filter

three85stroker Oct 17th, 06, 6:55 PM My brother went to a Jiffy Lube recently to have an oil change done on his '02 F250.
Before anthing was done, he asked how much it was going to cost, he was quoted about $59.00. He then gave them the O.K. to do it.
When they were done, he was told he owed $157.00!
The guy quoted him based on like 4 or 5 quarts instead of the needed 15 (even though they knew exactly what he was driving).
My brother then told them he wasn't paying $157, when he only agreed to have it done based on a quote of $59, and that if they weren't going to honor that price, that they could put the old oil back in, and eat the cost of the 15 quarts they just wasted. They guy replys with "We can put your old oil back in, but you'll be 9 quarts low", to which my brother says "Bulls**t, I wasn't 9 quarts low when I pulled in here, and I'm sure as hell not going to be when I leave".
At this point, whoever was in charge at the time gets involved. They asked the tech if he quoted him (my bro) the right price. My brother could already tell what kind of guy this tech was, and knew he was going to lie. So my bro looked him dead in the eye and tells him "Don't you even think about lying or I'll punch you square in the teeth". My brother is 6'4" 400 lbs, and was so pi$$ed, that he absolutely looked like he'd make good on his promise. The 'in charge' guy sided with his tech, saying that regardless of what he was quoted, he owed the $157 and that there was nothing they could do about it. My brother grabbed his phone and told them both that this would be straightened out in about 2 minutes. They asked who he was calling, he just said not to worry about it, that they'd find out in a minute.
Who he was calling, was a friend of his at work, who just happens to be married to the guy in charge of all the J.L. stores in this region.
While my brother is on the phone, the tech is telling him "they're not going to do anything". And he doesn't even know who my brother is talking to yet!
A minute later, their phone is ringing, they get a tongue lashing from someone they don't even know because he's so high up on the corporate ladder, and they are forced to honor the $59 quote they gave.
Sweet satisfaction
bisjoe Oct 17th, 06, 7:06 PM I send my son to Big-O where after tax and disposal fee it's still covered by a $20 bill. Tried to get him to do it himself but hardly worth my time supervising for that price.
red '69 Oct 17th, 06, 7:18 PM Sweet revenge. The old "oops, so sorry" trick didn't work this time!
rocks66ss Oct 17th, 06, 7:21 PM When I get my oil changed at my mechanic they put in 7 quarts of Amsoil and it costs me around 80 bucks. 7 qts at 5.99 a qt, 1/2 labor at $64 hr, and a filter
I can't believe you told a zillion gearheads you pay 80 dollars to have your oil changed.
Rocky
Andy69 Oct 17th, 06, 7:42 PM O'Reilly house brand oil and filter. 5 quarts for $6, and $2.99 for the filter. They even take the used oil!
ktownkid Oct 17th, 06, 7:54 PM I change my oil myself and have the ramps to prove it!!!!!! (hehehe). One of these days, I'm gonna drive clear off the other side!!!!!!!

novaderrik Oct 17th, 06, 7:58 PM A Wix filer and a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 will cost around $25, and might take 1/2 hour to do it yourself in the driveway- but, come on, for a car guy, changing the oil is relaxing after a hard week's work, so the time doesn't count towards the cost.
FancyBoy Oct 17th, 06, 8:03 PM Nice Nova. I have a sports car that is a cream color. I'm going to contrast that with a light tan top and interior.
One of my favorite color combinations.
chevguy65 Oct 17th, 06, 8:25 PM Sounds like Jiffy Lube!! Did they really put the oil in?
The mom of a really good friend went into one of those places with her 2005 Taurus wagon and had them change her oil etc.
Well she leaves and by the time she gets home her motor was burned up. The fools forgot to put her drain plug back in, it was still sitting on their rack when her husband went back there to see wth happened.
Needless to say this Company bought and installed a brand new engine for them, but that is why I will never go to one of "those" places again. And NEVER with my Chevelle.
theclencher Oct 17th, 06, 8:28 PM Wow I like that Nova!
Re: $80 oil change- are you kidding?!? I suppose you do it every 3000 miles too!
I just got a couple cases of oil, 59 cents/qt after rebate; used a $1.99 filter I had stashed in the garage and did it in the driveway for a total of $4.94. And that oil stays in there for at least 6000 miles.
Daren71 Oct 17th, 06, 8:33 PM Since my Chevelle occupies the garage all year, the van goes to a Quaker State quick lube in the winter. I try and plan 1 oil change there in the winter. The rest is done in the driveway. I figure I save enough thru the summer, so when I do it myself, my treat is a candy bar. Doing it here in the winter is just plain ugly, I need a bigger garage. theclencher Oct 17th, 06, 8:42 PM I've done it outside at -30 in the snow.
Not that I like that sort of thing.
68start Oct 17th, 06, 10:08 PM I was short on time before a weekend trip and had the wife go to a quick place in or SUV. I noticed she was charged an EXTRA $15 for high mileage oil. I say EXTRA, in addition to the cost of the oil per quart. In otherwords they just decided to add $15 more to the bill and called it "high mileage". It wasn't an additive or anything, just an extra charge, as the quarts were already priced out on bill. I was soooo mad, not how I wanted to start a long trip. Yep they got my money and I did nothing. If only it was closer to me, I would have had some words.
I always do the changes on my wife's SUV now. I hate it, as I ALWAYS spill some. The oil shoots out and hits the bottom of the pan and bounces up to the brake rotor. Then half way draining it goes from shooting oil to splashing another direction. I hate it and can never seem to time the shooting correctly. I need one of those hose thingy's.
Okay vent over, this is on my to do list for this weekend.
BigsWick Oct 17th, 06, 10:23 PM I've done it outside at -30 in the snow.

Yes Sir!
Nothing like having to lay on a piece of cardboard on top of 12" of compacted snow (the Chevelle doesn't do snow- it stays in the garage) to do an oil change to the 5.9 Durango when it is -30! The easiest way to get the filter off is from over the passenger's side tire. Putting the new one on is the real trick when you can't feel your fingers...or your wrist...or your elbow.
Old, fat, bald guy Oct 17th, 06, 11:01 PM oil change? shoot, i just loosen up my valve covers a bit and add a quart every week....... after 5weeks, i gots me an oil change

I used to do that too, until I moved south and got a job :)
theclencher Oct 17th, 06, 11:09 PM Ha Ha! You have to go to WORK!
Andy69 Oct 17th, 06, 11:13 PM Ha Ha! You have to go to WORK!
yeah I wouldn't really call it work. People pay a lot of money to go on vacation and do what I get paid to do all year long :D
theclencher Oct 17th, 06, 11:30 PM Well that sounds like a good gig! :D
53Chev Oct 17th, 06, 11:46 PM Just did a oil change myself this past weekend. It took me all of 20 minutes and its been about 15 years since I did my last one. I have always gone to the local garage for mine. Lately the owner of the garage I dealt with started to become a little snarky with his customers, including me. Complaining that he makes no money on oil changes and so forth. He tried to pull a fast one on me and my usual 20 dollar bill under the table suddenly ballooned to 50 bucks. I just looked at him and said "Are you out of your f**king mind?" He just shrugged and said pay up or get out. He had already removed my oil and put in a new filter so the only thing my car was missing was the new oil. Luckily, I had a large jug of penzoil in the trunk. I poured it in while they watched and then said "see ya round!" and drove out without paying a penny. Lesson learned. I will now do my own. I usually stock up on oil now when it comes on sale for 8-10 bucks a large jug. I get Q-State, Penzoil, Mobil, or Castrol. The filter is around 7 bucks. For 20 bucks I would rather do it myself and KNOW that it has been done right. Plus I enjoy tinkering with my car in my free time. My only problem last weekend was not paying attention to the drain pan placement and realizing only AFTER I had crawled out from under the car that most of the oil was missing the pan and draining into the storm drain beside it. I cant say I have EVER done anything as boneheaded as that before.
Unless of course I count the time I gave a cop the finger for cutting me off......I got a ticket for that faux pas and a tongue lashing from the cop.
Live and learn I guess!
theclencher Oct 18th, 06, 12:15 AM "Luckily, I had a large jug of penzoil in the trunk. I poured it in while they watched and then said "see ya round!" and drove out without paying a penny.""
Ha Ha, SWEET!
You will treasure that moment forever.
53Chev Oct 18th, 06, 12:53 AM Definately right place, right time. I had just stocked up.
Phil Keller Oct 18th, 06, 2:10 AM I take 5 qts of oil + filter, to the quick change oil place and have them do it. Still costs 18 bucks, but there's no oil running all over my driveway or garage afterward.
malibu400 Oct 18th, 06, 5:25 AM Jiffy lube's high mileage oil is probably the used oil from the car they did just before yours
Wwalstrom Oct 18th, 06, 7:35 AM I've done it outside at -30 in the snow.
Not that I like that sort of thing.
I've done the same thing ... with transmissions ...
Junkyard Dawg Oct 18th, 06, 8:11 AM Nice Nova ktownkid.
Another member on this board highly advises against using high mileage oil....he claims he had 3 jap cars with around or over 200k on them and after using this oil it softened up the seals enough that he had oil leaks all over the driveway.
This is one of the reasons I do my own oil changes. It's so easy why pay a garage to charge you out the ass?
If there's snow on the ground I have a pair of thermolined coveralls to keep me warm, I've got my ramps...
three85stroker....I'm suprised those two fools didn't call the law on your bro.....even if they were in the wrong to rip someone off making a threat is just bad bad bad.....
69boo307 Oct 18th, 06, 8:19 AM and by 'high mileage' oil, they meant the refilled it with used oil that had 15k miles on it.
justkyle Oct 18th, 06, 10:43 AM I can't believe you told a zillion gearheads you pay 80 dollars to have your oil changed.
Rocky Well, that is only on my work truck and its a write off. Plus I like having them do it so I can stand around and shoot the B.S. with the owner and bench race.
thunderstruck507 Oct 18th, 06, 2:50 PM Wow that sounds like a ripoff. Even Royal Purple is only $6 a quart. I wonder how many people pay it and don't think twice about the extra cost they're getting ripped for though?
Junkyard Dawg Oct 19th, 06, 12:16 AM That's why I don't use it......not worth $6 a bottle....
Of course I'm sure the guys on HPTV can really comment on this since they get it in exchange for sponsorship.
thunderstruck507 Oct 19th, 06, 12:32 AM That's why I don't use it......not worth $6 a bottle....
Of course I'm sure the guys on HPTV can really comment on this since they get it in exchange for sponsorship.
I use the Royal Purple and a Mobile 1 Extended Performance filter and extend oil changes to 6-7k miles. Even then as long as I haven't added regular oil in between the oil still has the purple color rather than being dark black.
So it saves me time and a 4 hour trip home and ends up being the same price as 2 regular oil changes with name brand oil and filter.
theclencher Oct 19th, 06, 2:14 AM Regular el-cheapo oil lasts 6000 miles too under normal conditions.
chevelledude71 Oct 24th, 06, 10:37 PM What nova are you guys refering too? I see a red x...
Junkyard Dawg Oct 24th, 06, 10:50 PM Wherever ktownkid has his photo hosted must be down or the url no longer works, but there was a pic of him in his beige colored '70 Nova about to drive it up on some ramps...at first i thought he was going to do it the redneck way....drive the front wheels up on a curb/sidewalk.
