Hey guys,

Just finishing up installing my interior and center console. I want to tap into the dome light's wires for the console's light. I'm waiting on my wiring diagram and was wondering where the dome light wires are located? Which pillar do they run down? I'm don't see any other courtesy interior lights to tap off of, so the dome is it. Thinking of installing a few under dash light while I'm at it.

Progress so far is floors coated, sound deadener down, carpet in, new sill plates, new dash pad, installed new seat chrome, and installed the center console. I'm still debating on what to do with the dash. SS or Covans. If I do an SS conversion it'll be the dash but with autometer gauges.

Cheers

Dave...The dome light wire doesn't run down the piller post. It runs across the ceiling and down behind the driver side rear window. It then feeds into the intermediate harness just before it enters the trunk behind the sail panel. The dash harness should have a plug to tie the console into near the radio area. That plug would be tied into the dome lite so the console light turns on when the door is opened.

BTW: I don't know where your wiring diagram is coming from, but most of the factory wiring diagrams don't show options like the console. The wiring will be shown in the assembly manual in the options/console section.

Bill,
Thanks. This is a non-console equipped car and I added the console so under the dash, would that plug still be there even though the option wasn't on my car? I'll look underneath and see if I can find a stray plug and see if it's hot when the door is open and cold when the door is closed. Thanks for the help and my wiring diagram is the factory one so I'm not expecting to be too impressed if it's like others I have used. But it's a start.

Cheers

From my experience some wire harnesses have them, some don't. For the wires, tap into the orange wire for power (lighter or clock) and white wire for ground when door opens, use either the white wire to drivers door or passenger door jamb switch. For the console dash lights tap into any grey wire (radio power plug or AC panel light). If you have the plug for the console it would be near the netural safety switch and backup switch plugs. It would be the mate for the radio power plug (in other words you COULD plug it into the plug for radio power) It would have three wires - Orange, White and grey.

Mine was a "doesn't have it" car. After an exhaustive search I came up empty. I did exactly as you just mentioned. Tapped into the orange off the lighter and the white ground off the pax door jamb switch. Works great. Now I'll probably add a few underneath the dash in each foot well. Thanks for the help.

There is a courtesy light harness you can buy for the under dash foot lighting. The harness comes with all the wiring, the light sockets and the light socket mounts. I installed it on my '70 and it was pretty easy.
