We are getting ready to paint my dad's 53 Chev P/U and I can't find the list of lifetime paint on the PPG website for the lifetime warranty. I realise we won't be eligable since we are doing it at home but I want to go the same rout. I think someone said you go to bare metal start with etch (I don't know which one) then etc...

Well you should go to the store you bought the paint from or intend to buy from and get the info from them. You can also email PPG from that website, I use www.ppgrefinish.com (http://www.ppgrefinish.com) asking what the proper route is.
The info I have is first use a etch primer on bare metal then followed up with a urethane primer. The etch to use is dx1791 and the primer surfacer is K36/K38.
Then use your topcoat, SS ureathane would be DCC. The baseclear system would be DBC followed with a few clears, 2021, 2042, 2055 and I believe a few others.
You are right you WONT be eligable to recieve the warrenty because NOW you need to be a DELTRON or GLOBAL depending on system you use, cerifit painter in order to recieve the lifetime warrenty from PPG. The only paint system you JOE PUBLIC can buy is deltron as global is NOT to be sold to the public, hell I cant even buy Global paint and am a deltron cerfit painter.

Global is available to everyone around here through the local NAPA. Interesting.

Bob that is interesting as the store that sells Global in my area is Arnold Motor Supply, and they WONT sell to anyone that is not a certified Global painter. The rep has also mentioned this a time or two, PPG wants that line of product to be a specific line avaible only to the certified shops.
Global has a sweet sealer that I want to use but cant use it cus am not global certified. The only way I can get my hands on some is if the rep buys and runs it throu his name :(
