i have an 83 chevy scottsdale that i just put an engine in. i got a 1968 307 chevrolet engine, turbo 350 transmission , 168 tooth flex plate "fly wheel". my question is does any one know what starter will bolt up and work. i bought a 307 starter for a truck engine and it wont bolt up. i dont have a clue what the engine came out of . when i searched for the casting number it just came up as 68 307. is there any way to find out this info. any help would be great.

you need the "staggered" mounting pattern starter for the 14" 168 tooth flywheel/flexplate, the starter with the straight across mounting bolt pattern is for the 12 3/4" 153 tooth flywheel/flexplate. For manual trans applications there are probably a need for a particular nose piece on the starter, but this shouldn't apply to you.

As newmexguy said, if you are using a stock type starter, you will need one with an offset or staggered bolt pattern.
However, you can also use a mini-starter with the dual in-line pattern such as:
