: BBC Vs. SBC Body Mounts on 64

My dad is looking to get a set of body mounts for his 64 Chevelle SS car. It came with the body off the frame and has been back-halfed. The car has a BBC and there is a supplement shown for the big block cars. What is this and is it necessary for a 64?

The parts car that we have has no bushings (Rubber) on the radiator support, does that have anything to do with it? TIA

I am going to go way out there on this one. There was no BB in 64 or 65 Chevelles as far as I know. Ok there were about 5 Z16s made in '65 but that was it. So, if your 64 has different rad support mounting it is likely it was simply a "first run" being the 64 was a new body or someone changed it over the years. I know of no difference in rad support mounting from 64 to 67 be it BB or SB.

Now, if you are refering in the "supplement" to the rear frame kick up supports, yes there were some on BB cars. They are a bolt in piece that runs from the lower control arm bolt to the upper control arm bolt to help support the frame. I am not real sure on when they were used, it may have only been on four speed cars.

My understanding is that 64s do not have rubber bushings on the rad support.

Since the car has been back-halved, I do not think that I would worry about the BB supplemental mounts, the frame should be pretty solidly tied to the body at this point anyway.

You may want to hold out for a more informed opinion than mine though.

GM produced 201 Z-16's in '65. One experimental prototype in Baltimore and 200 "production" units in Kansas City.

Then there's that all-elusive convertible that nobody seems to be able to document which would make 202 - a number that no publication has ever quoted. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

We are getting this info from OPG as well as other parts books that we have. It show this "Supplement" for 64-67 then 68-72, and it says that this is required for most BBC cars. Granted this is not a factory BBC car, but we are wondering what this is exactly. It looks like a regular body bushing in the photo.

Its not the rear control arm brace in the rear of the car. I have that on my 70 Malibu. I think they were on all 4 speed and 12 bolt rears, this has been talked about in the past. Plus that cant work with this car with the ladder bars http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanks guys

The supplemental body mount is probably the extra body mount used on convertibles. this adds an additional body mount at the base of the firewall. Coupes use just one on each side while convertibles use two on each side in this area. It would make sense to include this additional body mount with a big block due to the extra torque of the engine.

Rich I bet thats what it is. Where do they mount compaired to the regular mounts? Once the weather gets better we will start working on the car again... Thanks again

The body mount bracket and the hole in the frame are already there. What is missing (if it is a coupe body) is the cage nut. The body mount is at the base of the fire wall about 4-5 inches inboard from the single coupe mount. The coupe mount is at the outside edge of the frame rail, the convertible's supplemental mount is on the frame a little forward and inboard where the frame begins to narrow down for the front suspension/engine support. You should see a body mount cage on your fire wall that is simply not used.

My 64 ElCamino had the extra body mounts that you are refering to. I'm not sure why, they were in there, so I just replaced them. I would just count the holes and buy the mounts for all of them, can't hurt.

I looked at my brother in law's 65 while I was visiting today and there is no place on the front of the body to line up with the extra hole in the frame. Probably nothing to do unless you make a mount bracket for the firewall.

The 1964 Chevelles did not have radiator support bushings just solid mount with shims to set height.
Bushings first used on 65 model.
Good Luck

Thank's for the replies guys. We ordered the mounts.....gettin anxious to work on that beast. And on the parts car, the radiator support just has a few shims for alignment of the front end. It looked proper but the comfirmation makes me feel more comfortable. Thanks again. Jeff
