: New Best ET
mr 4 speed Oct 13th, 06, 6:34 PM Went to a track rental today at LVD.Got a few runs in,best run was 12.56 @ 108 MPH w/a 1.83 60 ft.
Worst run was a 12.61 @ 107.7 w/a 1.85 60 ft.
Only changes where swapping my stock 215's for a pair of ported 063's with 2.19/1.88 valves (Thanks again Jim R/Epistuff)
This is thru the exhaust (3" head pipes,10+ year old 2.5" in/out Flowmasters and 2.5" tailpipes)
Tires where Hoosier QT DOT Pro's 26x9.5X15 (19 lb. air)
Also,drove my Cousin's 350 Olds powered 1985 Cutlass to a best of 14.13/97 MPH w/a 2.04 60 ft.
His best was a 14.23 :D
..and the 33 year old,130,000+ mile 454 pulled from a 1973 GMC p/u truck (completely stock,untouched lower end including bearings and oil pump) with my old 215 heads and a 228/238 .540/.540 Summit cam ran a best of a 13.43 @ 101 MPH with a 1.96 60 ft. in a 1980 Malibu.
Details are a peanut port Edelbrock Performer,3310 Holley, huge Hooker Super comp Headers (2 1/8" primary tube/3.5" collector) funneled down a 2.25" exhaust  :D
Has 3.42 gears and a B+M 2400 convertor/TH350
Lot more left in that combo with a good intake/exhaust thats for sure
Anyway, had a great day..hung out with a few fellow TCers as well
cmt454 Oct 13th, 06, 6:39 PM Nice job Chris! What were the temps? I am planning on getting out in that nice cool air.
Chris that is great! Glad my old heads picked up some nice ET for you.
Richie does a good job with porting on the those heads. Congrats on the new bests!:beers:
....now update your sig:D

Wow Chris...big improvement. Congrats!!
I'm guessing there wasn't any snow/rain that far east.
Hi-po SS 454 Oct 13th, 06, 8:23 PM Into the Mid 12's, Great !!!
69-CHVL Oct 13th, 06, 9:15 PM Congrats!
Wonder what made the biggest difference: the heads, exhaust, or carb (still got the DP on there?)
GRN69CHV Oct 13th, 06, 9:15 PM Isn't that a .5 second drop from the last time out?
PS - so you'v done the gear change to 3.31's (??), the exhaust change to 3" head pipes an intake swap and now the head change to some ported larger valve heads. You do realize that you are possibly only a cam change away from breaking into the 11's!!
=....You do realize that you are possibly only a cam change away from breaking into the 11's!!
Hmmmmm, wonder where he can get a good deal on the cam that was originally used with those heads? :waving:
I doubt it will get you in the 11's though. That combo got me a 12.27, but hey,...who knows.
HPseeker Oct 13th, 06, 10:09 PM Congrats. Chris ,your combo is really a street combo and with that 3.31  , I bet with a lower ratio and bigger slicks , (just to make you hook better ) you will go faster .
69ssmike Oct 13th, 06, 11:42 PM Congrats:thumbsup: I'm running the 215's also, some headwork and possibly a cam this winter:D What size headers you running?
BLT4FN Oct 13th, 06, 11:46 PM Nice going Chris
Stay with the 3:31... wish I had.
kjett Oct 13th, 06, 11:51 PM Congrats, Chris. Doesn't seem like that long ago you were trying to get into the 12's. Now you're closing in on 11's
Rich-L79 Oct 13th, 06, 11:51 PM Sounds like a pretty fun day.
Mike McMasters Oct 14th, 06, 12:16 AM congrats chris! now change that signature..
mike
1968 hot rod Oct 14th, 06, 5:23 AM congrats great running car!!!
try dropping the exhaust next time and adding collecter extensions
mr 4 speed Oct 14th, 06, 6:07 AM Thanks guys :)
Mike,I am using 1 3/4" primary headers
Joe,best previous ET was 12.85/105.5 MPH with the exhaust swap
Bill,it did rain around midnight and the rain froze, but they prepped the heck out of the track between the dryer and traction compound
Temps where in the mid-low 50's,DA was 165 ft.
Vince, when I ran the car back in April, the exhaust swap showed no measurable gains (but of course it changed the way it sounds which makes you think its faster :D )
I did leave the double pumper on,jetting is 73/83 and the 3310 had 74/82 when I was at the track back in April.
The 3310 was always worth a solid 1 MPH over the DP with my combo previously.
All the gain was in the heads I'm sure.
I was going to try the 3310 out,but a few crashes and equipment problems held up the track so I left.
69-CHVL Oct 14th, 06, 8:28 AM Chris, do you mind posting the rest of the times (like 1/8 mile et/mph)...seems like our combos seem to run very close.
I'm thinking that if we went to 3.73's to better, we would see some substantial increases in performance. I don't know how much better we can do w/ the 3.31's. Truthfully, I dont see me changing out these gears - its 1st duty is being a street car.
mr 4 speed Oct 14th, 06, 8:49 AM Vince, here you go (best run)
1.834 60 ft.
330 5.21
660 8.02/87.7 MPH
no 1000 ft. data on slip
1320 12.56/108.1 MPH
I have no plans on changing the gears or convertor.
If I where to change anything,my rear suspension is completely stock and untouched, other than new LCA bushings, shocks and stock replacement Moog springs.
SSM's and a passenger side air bag would certainly knock that 1.83 down a little or so.
A 1.77-1.79 or better would get me into the 12.4X's or a 12.39 with the same 108 MPH
For now,I won't be changing anything.I'll be focusing on getting the Buick solidly into the 13's,which shouldn't be hard to do.
Vince,3.73's would really help your combo out IMHO,especially with a stick.
Bob West Oct 14th, 06, 9:34 AM Congratulations Chris!!! Any desire to go faster? You might take Jim up on the cam that goes with those heads ;)
BLT4FN Oct 14th, 06, 1:00 PM Chris are combo's must be very close.
I have gone a 12.39 @ 110 mph on 3:31 and a 1.86 60ft.
This year after changing to 3:73 it was slightly slower 12:47). Then changed carbs and went 12:36 @ 108.9mph with a 1.80 60ft. The 12:36 run was done one year -1 day from doing the 12:39.
The .06 I gained in the 60ft did not show up that much in the 1/4 mile time and I lost mph.
All of these runs were done on BFG TA's.
So for me the gear change was something I should maybe not have done, and could of used the money for the gears somewhere else.
It would be fun to line are cars up sometime in the future as they are so close. It would all come down to reaction time and I usually take a pillow with me to the line:D.
69ssmike Oct 14th, 06, 7:31 PM Gotta love the good air, just ran a best of 12.84 at 107. Glad I don't have to shift it though;)
mc71454 Oct 14th, 06, 7:58 PM Congratulations Chris!!! Any desire to go faster? You might take Jim up on the cam that goes with those heads ;)
Nice Going Chris...
Wish we had more time to hang out on Friday...After you left another car hit the wall, nobody was hurt, but I only got 4 runs in the whole day and I had my 4th run at 4:55 pm :( ...
Great Video That Johnny O got.
Are you going to Stafford Springs tomorrow ?
mr 4 speed Oct 14th, 06, 8:01 PM Tom,no Stafford for me..got too much do to.
Too hectic of a day on Friday..late start due to the rain on the track didn't help either. My cousin said there was 4 crashes after I left
Ride home sucked..got stuck in plenty of traffic..felt like I was driving home from Raceway Park
Chris Stanwyck Oct 15th, 06, 7:38 AM Congratulations.
Nice to see changes makin a difference.
Just sent in the Vic jr you sold me to get matched with my AFR 335's.
Will keep you posted.
chris
Barista Oct 15th, 06, 8:52 AM It's always great to see your changes & improvements, Congrats.
Chris, Congrats!! The car looks awesome in the videos that were posted in another thread. I gotta get my car to the track next week. It's getting near the end.
427L88 Oct 15th, 06, 5:04 PM :thumbsup:Very cool!
Wasnt it Tom that said the only thing he'd tweak on your combo was the heads, about two years ago?
Bet, although we'll never know, those prepped 063s might not have done that good with 2.56s , although I'd be darn curious.
69-CHVL Oct 15th, 06, 5:10 PM I'm surprised the larger headpipes didn't help your mph or et's. Probably had a good set of pipes before the swap.
Or, those flowmasters are holding you back!!!
71malibu406 Oct 15th, 06, 5:30 PM congrats on the new bests. this is just my opinion from personal experience, but with the combo you have you are matched just about perfectly with your gears and convertor, no way would i change either without changing the cam. i would bet that 3.55's or 3.73's would do absolutely nothing for your ET but it would suck more gas and turn more rpms when you are driving it. as far as the exhaust change you made not helping it, i can see why it made no difference if you didn't change the rest of the exhaust to 3", especially the mufflers. i would also bet that changing the exhaust to 3" thru an "X" pipe and 3" through the mufflers would help considerably, especially without tailpipes. i had 2 1/2" straight back through Dynomax Super Turbos on my 406 and when i switched to 3" with an "X" pipe and 3" Super 40's i picked up almost .4 at the track and contrary to what everyone thought would happen, i gained just as much lowend as i did topend. i went from completely hooking with the 2 1/2" exhaust (mid 1.60 60ft times) to smoking the tires through first and half of second and having to put my slicks on it to hook it half way decent to the tune of 1.55 60ft times. (my slicks are old and worn out though). with a new set of sticky Mickeys i think i can get a couple more hundreths off that 60ft. it also went from 86mph 1/8mi to almost 90mph. i did not change my headers only the exhaust.
70L34 Oct 15th, 06, 10:07 PM Congrats Chris! Interesting how much benefit the 2.19 valves gave you. You're a couple of tenths faster than my Camaro with a mostly stock '70 LS5 and 3.08 gear (all credit goes to you for guiding my motor build and gear choice). I'll blame it all on the 2.06 valves in mine....
