Just purchased a 1970 Elky Custom with SS wheels. The black area is pretty worn and I would like to repaint that section. Can I paint them while still on the car versus pulling one wheel at a time and either way what paint is best used for this? I thought I heard also there is an overlay you can buy to cover the silver/chrome area so I don't accidently paint that. Is that true? Thanks for the help.

You could paint them on the car, but not only harder to do a nice job, but you will likely get overspray on the car... Depending on the paint and weather conditions, that overspray can travel far (easily 50 feet)...

Eastwood makes a kit for redoing the SS wheels. Here's their website: http://www.eastwoodco.com/cgi-bin/sgsh0101.exe?&UID=2002091212073472&SKW=TSC3&FNM=20

If you want them to look good, pull the wheels off. You can get tape kits from most off the restoration catalogs but I think your better off taping them with the blue fine line tape and tape the rest with 2" tape. I had better results that way.

Thanks. Sounds like it best to take them off the car. Expect it will be a good Spring project.

Steve,
I just refinished the wheels on my convert. Masking them off is a very tedious task. I had the wheel mask kit, and it is of some help, but it's not all encompassing. If it was something quick & easy, I'd say you could do it with the tires still mounted, but it is not. I think you're better off to remove the tires, have the wheels blasted, prime them with some good epoxy primer, then paint from scratch. Painting the silver part is easy; it's masking off the silver area to paint the black that's a bear. As you say, a good springtime project. You might want to do the wheels for your convert at the same time http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Masking wheels is not easy - Being round and concave, they present quite a few challenges. You don't want to deal with them being sideways right next to the ground on top of that. My recommendation is to take them off of the car. That's the way I've always done wheels, and it worked out really well (not that I'm a pro, just my opinion).
