: starter wiring???

I know this has been covered, and I think I've read every post on the subject, but still I can't get my car to run. Here's the situation. 70 chevelle with 350 crate motor, recently changed over to HEI. I just purchased a reman starter and had it bench tested(tests fine). I have replaced both batttery cables(ran ground to frame?) Hooked large diameter wire to "S" terminal(power when cranking) and also tried it on "R", no luck. I have two other wires that get power with ignition in the "on" position which I've swapped from terminal to terminal and still no luck. I get it to "click, click" and the longer I hold the key on,the clicking gets faster but it won't turn over. 12.3v at wire that gets power when cranking. 12.3v at smaller wires with key in "on" position. What led me to replacing the starter was an intermitent no start condition, Generally it would start one time in the morning and then just click. Sometimes jumper cables would do the trick, sometimes not. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like either a weak battery or poor ground. Where do you have your neg. batt cable connected, and the neg pigtail?

Negative battery cable is connected to the frame with a bolt. Negative pigtail was connected to fender with a bolt.

Could be mechanincal interference to flywheel. If starter gear cannot extend out far enough the starter motor will not get power. The click is the solenoid.

Battey cable should be connected to the engine block or a least to some other piece of metal that is in turn connected to the engine.

What Dean said, I couldn't get my starter to do much of anything until I moved the ground cable to the alternator bracket. Make sure you have bare metal under your ground cable.

Thanks guys. Tomorrow morning I will move the ground to the engine. I can not put it on the alternator bracket because I have a chrome bracket on there now. I'm sure I can find somewhere though. As far as the starter gear not extending far enough, is this just a simple fix with a shim or two?

Bad ground it was!!! I moved ground to the cylinder head and PRESTO! Amazing, after swapping wires, starters and shims it was something so simple. Took it out for a ride and I'm good to go. Too bad it's raining...Thanks to all!!!
