OK, I broke one of the u-joint strap bolts off in the pinion yoke on my '69.

I have another yoke still on the rear on my '70 parts car.

Would you try to drill and tap the existing yoke or replace it with the other one.

And, I've never removed a pinion yoke before. Any tips to make the job go right?

Thanks

Is the bolt broke off deep in the hole or is it close to the top? If it is close to the top then I would use a MIG selder and weld a washer and nut to it and remove it that way. The heat from welding it will loosen it up and the nut will give you something to turn it with. If it is broke off deep then drilling may be the only way. If you are carefull you won't damage the threads. Don't go to an over size bolt because this will throw off the ballance.

I'd try and get the bolt out also.

If not, for what it's worth, I recently did the pinion yoke on my '72 10-bolt and it was not that hard to do. My biggest concern was the proper torque on the nut when replaced. I was told to go to zero "lash" plus 1/4 turn. Be sure and replace the seal while you have it off. I have had no problems with it and it's been run for a good while. I can't imagine a 12-bolt is any different.

You'll also be reminded of the joyious smell of gear lube on everything!!

Thanks for the replies fellows.

The bolt broke off deep in the hole.

Looks like I may be better off replacing the yoke.

Remove the old yoke and seal. Install a new seal, but don't drive it in all the way. You need to leave it out about 1/16 to 1/8 inch because the new seals are sometimes too long and contact the outer pinion bearing. Use a small amount of sealant around the inside of the housing where the seal will go to seal any scratches in the housing. Use grease on the rubber lip of the seal. Smear some sealant into the splines of the yoke and install it. Use red Lock Tight on the threads and torque the nut to 150 foot pounds. That should do it.
