: Vinyl top clue.
Wally Mar 18th, 02, 7:22 PM Should read glue, not clue.
What will take the glue off the top? I pulled the original top off the 71 to repair a small rust spot in the rear corner and would like to clean the top so we can have a new top put back. I know razor blades will get it off but I need to soak some of this stuff, it's thick!!

Stan-in-Spokane Mar 18th, 02, 8:59 PM Aircraft "clean strip" remover. I used a quart on my `70 and had some left over. You can get it at the local automotive paint store. Its like a thick jelly, works really well but stinks to hi heaven,"ventilate well" and dont get it on anything you dont want to throw away, scrapes off with putty knife!!
Wally Mar 18th, 02, 9:06 PM Alright! That's what I'm talking about low effort and maximun result. Thanks!

Joey B Mar 19th, 02, 10:04 AM I wouldnt use stripper anywhere NEAR my paint... youre playing with fire there, as far as i'm concerned... I just redid my top and used DX300 and a rag and slowly rolled off the glue... no, it wasnt immediate, and it wasnt fast... but when the D#300 ran down the side of the car a few times by accident, it didnt take the paint with it...if i had been using stipper i would have ruined my paint job at least 3 times. suit yourself, but id rahter put a little efort into it and be safe that rush through it and end up wasting a paintjob.
Wally Mar 19th, 02, 10:48 AM Not much original paint on this car and what is there is toast. I'm putting patch panels in the lower quaters, fixing a samll amout of rust in the rear window and I think the stripper will be just fine, paint at this time is not my concern, time is.

Joey B Mar 19th, 02, 11:53 AM Oh ok... i thought it was a finished car and you were just replacing the top... if theres no paint to hurt, then by all means use the stripper... i just put a top on my 69 SS396 elcamino that is completely restored, but had an incorrect padded top. I had to take great care in removing the moldings and glue without hurting the paint...actually, i just got the new top on this weekend... looks great, got the vinyl that is exactly like the original was, with no white fuzz on the back, just cloth... sits on the roof solid as a rock, just like day 1... good luck with your project! -Joe
1970ElCamino Mar 19th, 02, 11:59 AM Hey Joey,
Where did ya get your top? I'm going to need one for mine.
Thanks,
Al
Joey B Mar 19th, 02, 2:12 PM Im not sure, i got it through a buddy of mine... had it put on by a guy who used to do the "in house" vinyl tops for Yenko Chevrolet! I will check and let you know.
mrss Mar 19th, 02, 3:23 PM I bought my top from Paddock, OPG was out of stock. This one is a universal style because it looks like it would fit a 4 door Caddy!. Just had to cut it down slowly. Putting on a vinyl top on my '69 is not a fun job. Used the 3M super trim adhevise in the big spray can. $15.00 a piece at NAPA. Plan on using 4 cans. A big pain but better than paying shops around here. They all wanted $200. just for labor.

Wally Mar 24th, 02, 11:08 AM Update on the glue removal. I called the 3M company and asked them if they had anything that would remove the old glue. The guy asked me what color it was and I told him kind of an orange, he said maybe C4 might take it off!!
A local automotive paint store, Mattoes, sold my son a $12 can of stuff they said would do the deal. Soak a rag and wet the area and it will wipe off! Right, that stuff did not even think about removing anything.
I was going to use my stripper but decided to do it the hard way with razor blades, lots of razor blades.
What a bitch!

Joey B Mar 25th, 02, 11:24 AM sucks, doesnt it?
Hey Wally
I was affraid you were gonna have this much trouble. The best I can remember is that on the last car we had that had the vynil top we ended up using redi strip and the DA on it... that is some tough stuff!

Wally Mar 26th, 02, 1:59 PM Well it needed to be done. There is a very small rust hole in the lower corner of the passenger side rear window and another in the bottom piece of the rear window channel about 6 inches from the corner. Much better than my 67.
My fat ass sister is responsible for this, it was a garaged kept car since new with 14,000 on it until my sister talked my grandmother into letting her dive it. Kept it outside for 1 year in MO. and put 30,000 miles on it. I wanted to kill her.
