Was the wood grain dash strip available in the SS396 or just in the Malibu? Thanks, Jb

There are some who swear that their SS came with a wood grain strip, but that was a Malibu thing only.

i have a 67 ss with a woodgrain dash strip, some say that assembly line guys mixed them up on some cars, dont know??i have replyed to this guestion before and got a lot of people saying that it is a malibu piece only but the trim tag and vin plate have never been removed and it is a 138 car.talked to the original owners son who i bought it from and he says the dash has never been out of car or wouldnt have changed the strip, one may never know the answer, may be a job for the myth busters?

My 138 has the wood grain strip. Don't know if it's factory or an error in replacement.

Lets just put it this way...

Woodgrain dash strips are Malibu Only items.. if you or anyone else has an SS and the car has a woodgrain dash strip that you have hard core evidence to support that it came from factory that way.. This is a RARE exception to the Rule.. could it have happened? sure, anything is POSSIBLE.. but for those reading this now or in the future.. a few people on a message board stating what they have does not mean to let your guard down...... I would be very cautious and do your due diligence if looking to buy a 67 SS that has a woodgrain dash strip... just because it may have happened in a handful of cars... does not make it even close to being what 99.9% of SS 67's got.

Hi Mike,

Could the wood grain dash strip be ordered in a 66'? Or was that just a 67' malibu option? Reason I'm asking is that my 66' has a what I believe to be a 67' dash with the wood grain strip. Plus I need a new steering column and I want to order the correct unit (66' vs, 67').

Thanks
Tod

No Tod, 66's never got a woodgrain, not even the Malibus.

MIKES correct for sure-
malibu-wood grain-
super sport-- black

which strip does your car have jerry ??

I have seen 3 ss 67s in person with wood grain dash strips, one of them my car..
my car has everything ss,not meaning it has a ss emblem in the grill,I mean right down the line through out the car to the build card and partial vin stampings-and the distinct differences- but im not trying to make my car all origanal-its a street mod!!

but down the line over the last 40 years my ss dash was damaged, along with the windsheild and cowl-cowl was replaced with a 66 cowl, and the more common dash was installed--woodgrain malibu-maybe!! these are just my research results and logic.

strange though my dash has the orig hole for a blinker tach, and when I bought the car in 1981,the blinker tach was gone-but the bracket was there, who knows, who cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

correct for 67 ss dash strips are black ,not woodgrain-

But when someone assumes a 67 is a true ss or not just because it has a woodgrain dash strip, thats just not fair, they need to look harder, hence mikes advice!!!!

how many pro streeted true ss cars lost a lot of the ss things due to ripping and cutting-its still a ss if it has the numbers to prove it! and I dont mean a restapled 138 vin tag either!!

what im trying to say is ,its either an ss,or not an ss,dash strips dont dictate this!!!!!!! matter of fact, they are pretty easy to change!

Some goofy peaple had dealers changeout the dash strip on ss cars just because they did not like the black strip, now I have not seen it happen first hand-I was 5 years old,but its been the talk already-

67 SS396----BLACK STRIP!!!!!!!!!!!! IM NOT GONNA STAB IN THE COALS--
JUST MY OPINIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THATS ALL..

do you think if the factory ran out of a ss part they would stop the line????
or install the malibu part?????

whoooooooo knooooows, whooo cares--to many what ifs!!!!!

THERE IS TWO SIDES TO EVERY COIN--JUST MY OPINION!!!!!!!!

i.ve been told that the factory was on strike in 67 so they had a lot of cachin up to do. so a lot of parts got installed incorrectly.

Maybe you guys with the woodstrip SS's should compare VINs, build dates and plants. You never know, maybe they all came from the same factory on the same day (ie the day they ran out of black strips).

I've never seen a 67 SS with a wood grain dash that wasn't missing other identifying features. They did have 138 VIN tags thou..... . As with any of these cars nowadays if you don't know what to look for...Hire Someone who does. My guess would be 1 out of 4 are real SS cars from the shows I have been to.
