Would it be ok to use a MIG welder with Nickel welding wire to weld my steel GM axle tubes to my Iron center section?

I've heard this is ok, but maybe not the best welding solution. I am a beginner welder and don't know all the material science and chemistry behind this specific welding application. I've seen a website where this was done by a pro and it looked very impressive, but also very complicated with lots of steps and processes.

Can I just grind the two surfaces clean, use a Nickel wire and MIG weld it myself in my garage or I am I being stupid and cheap?
