: 66 trunk question

I have a 66 convertible that has had the trunk floor replaced a while back, but poorly done weatherstripping and neglect has caused water to get in there and start some rust.

I have the guidance of a friendly body shop who is helping me with preparing the trunk floor properly, he's a pro and I trust him, but he's not a Chevelle guy, he's a Ford guy. Anyway, I'm not building a show car here, but if the trunk is going to be painted, I may as well use the proper finish. My questions:

1. The trunk splatter paint, does the entire inside of the trunk get coated with this? Floor, insides of the quarters, and bottom of the lid? If not, what other paint is used where (the car is black).

2. What's with the trunk mat? Was that an option or was it always in there? Is it just placed in there on top of the splatter paint or is it adhered to the floor so you don't have to paint underneath it?

3. Does anyone have a photo of a correct 66 trunk they could email me?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

It's SPATTER PAINT. ;)

All 1966 Chevelles received a luggage compartment mat, it came rolled up in the trunk and was later installed by the dealer. No, it should not be stuck to the floor....it should not be installed until the spatter paint is completely dry.

Sounds like a quickie way is what you want, so I willl aloow my cohorts here to chime in, as I know many use rattle can type spatter paint.... and they would be best able to tell you brands...and how many cans you need...and b/c you are using rattle can type...you will need clear coat after dry...just be sure to get Black and White or Black /Aqua...not gray and white. Floors, quarters, tail panel inner side, not wiring.... NOT TRUNK LID, but some on hinges on lower part...not on vapor return tubes either....

Your professional body guy will know what to do.... again, with the understanding that you do not want a show car trunk and want to go way of rattle cans and not spray gun.

Good luck

Thank you sir. Splatter, spatter, I knew I couldn't type a whole paragraph without saying something stupid.

But yes, a quickie solution that looks reasonably correct to the casual observer is pretty much what I'm looking for. I'll stand by and hope more info comes in. Thanks. Ed.
