Hello,

I have a 69 El Camino With a split-back bench seat that I am replacing the seat covers on. Pulling the seats out of the Car was no problem but now with the disassebly im having some trouble. Im sure this is a pretty easy task but im not sure how to remove the seat backs from the bench.

Their is a bar on the outside of the seat back that connects to the bench that moves when the latch in the back is activated to move the seat forward. the bar looks like its held on with a pin.

Secondly in the middle of the seat where the two seat backs meat their is a mid section where a bar that runs through the base of the seat back connects into.

Im not sure how clear i am being when describing this, If anyone has ever dissasembled their seats or knows of a good web page that can show me these steps I would greatly appreciate it!

You can contact me at: Daniel@classicoverhaul.com

Thanks,

Daniel

The part that holds the outside of the back cushion to the seat bottom frame rotates on an axle of sorts. At the end of the axle or pin is a cap that holds everything in place. Pry it off. The cap is under the decorative plastic trim, if you still have that. Sometimes you can re-use that cap and sometimes you go to the hardware store and get a new one. Now pull outwardly on the arm that is attached to the seat back cushion to pull it off the axle. Then swing it up a bit. Now you are ready to lift the rear cushion up and rotate forward a bit. If you do it right, the back cushion will unplug the other pin from its home near the center of the seat. It may take some wiggling to find the sweet spot. Repeat this for the other side. By the way, it is easier to move the seat in the unassembled condition as it is 3 small, light pieces rather than one heavy big thing. When re-installing the seat in the car, put the bottom part in first, then install the back cushions (before bolting it down). This way is a lot easier than installing a complete seat assembly.
