I've gotten a lot of great info so far. Hopefully I can get just a little more and pull this thing out. I can't seem to figure out how to get the wire harnesses out of the speedometer (sweep style, if it matters). Also unsure about the speedo cable. Anyone got any tips?

the spedo cable has a spring clip on it. use your thumb and push it toward the speedo whlile pulling back on the cable.
harness has a place on each end squeeze them while gently pulling out

the wire harnesses can be removed by means of a small blunt regular screwdriver, to push in each side of each plug, use care as the plugs are usually brittle with age. Works for myself on old dried out new mexico wiring harnesses.
