You need to wipe it down with a good grease and wax remover before spraying the etching primer. I assume that's what the prep-sol is, so it sounds like you're on the right track.

thanks randy;;i thought i was right but had a friend told me that you had to do all this special acid washing and rewishing-treating with all these things i never heard of;;just one more thing is before i wipe down with prep-sol do i need to wash car with soap and water and if so what type of soap should be used;;;

If you are using an etching primer DONT USE AN ACID WASH! The etching primer I'm using warns the user NOT TO- as the a-wash interferes with the etching primer. I dont think there is really a perfect "formula" for pre etch cleaning- just make sure its as CLEAN AS YOU CAN POSSIBLY GET IT before you spray it, and as Randy said use the w/g remover!! Your'e on the right track, though- also dont forget the tack rags http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

The acid wash is for really badly rusted metal, I wouldnt use it. You need good adhesion for any thing to stick to bare metal so rough up the metal with a da sander and 180 to 220 grit sand paper. Next throughly wipe down the car until the rags are spotless, use a wax and grease remover.
Just make sure that your etch prime is a self etching primer not an expoy primer like PPG DP90. Years back PPG had everyone believing that this stuff is the greatest for bare metal, now they are back stepping and recommanding a self etching primer like DX 1791 or DPX 171, or Dupont variprime. Now once the etch primer is on you need to apply a 2K primer or primer surfacer(the primer that you block sand and block sand). Just make sure that you apply it within the allowed time window
