Today I picked up a 350 4 bolt main block for $50.
It is a 3970010 block with 2482 center caps.
The block has never been decked and I am wondering if it has ever been bored. Using an old vernier the bores measure 4.020. Would this block clean up at 4.030?

I am taking it in next week to be tanked and mag'd and to be properly checked out as to bore size needed to clean it up. Just wondering in the meantime.

Also, a few of the lifter bores have a bit or rust as well.
Can this be honed out?

Have your machine shop check the bores with a bore mic. If it has even wear then they can hone it another .010. That is what I did with my 350. It was @30 over and he hone it to 40 over.

Cleaned up the block and gave it a quick inspection.
Three cracked cylinder walls!!
Is it worth keeping the good caps?

Man that stinks !!!!!!!!!!!!! :( I dont believe it's even worth keeping the caps. If you were to convert a block to 4 bolt mains you might as well get splayed caps. I mean if someone needs one or two for a replacement that would be cool. They still have to have it aligned bored.

I'm not so sure I'd be so quick to junk it. It is VERY possible that it can be sleeved into a VERY good engine. YES, if all else is good, it would be just fine with 3 sleeves!!! Especially if this is to become a street/performance engine.
