: Show us your custom dash
66SSFan Oct 7th, 06, 12:47 PM This dash was made by my friend that owned the car before me, it had matching door panels also. I replaced the door panels with repo's from PUI. I'm looking for ideas to try and incorporate the stock dash insert with modern gauges and don't really like the covans insert for '66. Anyone using Haneline? I would like to get some pictures of what some of you have come up with.

rusty66 Oct 30th, 06, 2:23 AM These pictures are perhaps not exactly what you asked for, because I used a different aproach. My goal was to create room for switches, gauges and a modern radio, but at the same time keep the dash original.
The wiring of the add-on connects to the car solely through connectors. It can be removed as a complete unit.

How about a break down of "Ttt" for us that are not so internet savy.
just curious.
rusty66 Oct 30th, 06, 7:13 AM LK. As a driver it does not limit me at all. On the other hand I am just 5 ft 8 tall. As a passenger you are more limited with your feet by the heater unit, than by this dash extension. It is only 3 inches high.
To pervent serious scalding during an accident, I made the stainless bead at the lower side. This is a 1/4 inch rod.

Matt Leuck Oct 30th, 06, 10:56 PM Still have the sweep speedo, but made an aluminum panel to replace the factory radio location. Put gauges in there then dropped an aftermarket head unit below the dash in an aluminum enclosure.

Brad Jan 22nd, 07, 12:39 PM Here is mine, not as clean as most on here, but it gets the gauges up at eye level, but not in the way, and keeps them out from under the dash. Also doesn't look too out of place, and if I do it again, now that I have some experience with the fiberglas, I think I could blend it in to the dash pad a bit better.

SSnooj Oct 10th, 07, 3:16 AM Hey 5150-
I like what you did there. Did you use the trim ring that came with those gauges? I'd like to see how you have those stuck in there.
I have the SS dash with idiot lights and want to do something similar.
Nooj
team5150 Oct 10th, 07, 9:39 PM The trim rings are black. I used them because I wanted a look that looked like you were looking into a hole at the gauges.
I didn't use the plastic lense for that reason too. At night it made the gauges reflect back the light from them and during the day you could see the lense in front of the gauge. I'll post a pic of the back as soon as I renew my subscription and can post more pix. It was very hard to do this ! You have to be very good at fabricating and just take your time in doing it.

Scotch Oct 12th, 07, 12:08 PM This is a cool thread. I'm looking at how to re-do my '67 dash to put round gauges in place, and there's some cool ideas here.
My problem is I've chosen a '60s-era 'theme' for the car and anything that looks high-tech or billet is out of the question. So, black-faced gauges that have a musclecar-era feel are what it's gonna be. Autometer's Sport Comp II that fits the bill nicely. I'm pretty sure they're what I'm going with. I dig how the numbers are backlit- it's kinda modern but you only see it at night when they're lit.
I like the look of the Camaro dashes, and I was considering trying to do something like that (with 2 large, round pods flanked with smaller ones) or just do a Covan's deal and make it look as good as possible. I think the Covan idea is a good one, it just needs some refinement to look really cool.
The gauge angle is important to me, as I want them squarely facing me instead of up or down- even a little off would bug me.
Any other ideas for cool '67 dashes with round gauges? There's lots of creativity shown here.

I guess I don't understand something about custom dashes. I can appreciate those of you that have the tools, time, and ability to make your own. I certainly don't have what it takes in all 3 of those categories to make a nice looking dash. And I have seen some dashes people have created which would never make it into any of my cars I have done in the past. So for those of us that need something from an aftermarker vendor like Covan's, what is so wrong with their inserts. The Covans I put in our 66 fit pretty well and other than changing the way the piece secures over the glove box, it was almost a bolt in item. In fact, the first one I got had trash in it and they sent me another one with no problems. I have read post about how flimsy it is or how bad it fits or even how bad it looks. I don't get that and quite frankly on cruise night that dash has gotten more compliments than almost any other thing on the car. I just hope you guys that are in the same situation I am in with needing something like this in the aftermarket don't automatically assume they are not worth the couple hundred dollars that you have to layout to get one. I am not stirring this thread, I just want to state my opinion that when properly outfitted with nice guages and taking your time installing it these aftermarket inserts are in fact quite cool.
Scotch Oct 19th, 07, 12:56 PM Slopar-
I don't think everyone is down on Covans...I just think they're looking for other options since Covans stuff has been around for awhile.
I wish there were 5 or 6 companies making dash inserts that I could choose from, but that's simply not the case! I think I'll get one too, and then modify it to suit my tastes.

Do a search engine about the Covans dash inserts on this board and you be the judge. And everyone has to come to their own conclusions about what they like or dislike. I am just stating that for my world I will gladly pay for an insert because fabricating something like that is not my forte. I know Hanlon had an insert that was nice. I am going to try and post one of mine tomorrow but with the car is blocked in the garage right now and I want to get it out in the sunlight to get a good picture of it. That center console is incredible. How, who did that? I am looking at creating a custom console for my son's elcamino. He doesn't have a floor shifter but I am planning to put an iPod dock, cup holders and some switches for neon's. Please give details.
On the subject, we are not putting in a custom dash but redoing the original. It's looking great and sense you can't buy a aftermarket 68 chevelle/el camino dash with the original gauges, it's a lot of work but is turning out great.

66SSFan Oct 15th, 08, 2:50 PM Anymore ideas from the '70 dash?
Jaybo518 Oct 15th, 08, 3:31 PM Here are several pics of the Monte dash I customized for my '71 wagon project. I recently installed it and fired up my big block and everything works perfectly. I'll have to take more pics of it installed.

66SSFan Oct 15th, 08, 3:33 PM Looks Great Jason, what brand gauges did you use?
Jaybo518 Oct 15th, 08, 5:15 PM I used Equus guages and a lokar shift indicator.
MAXX2 Oct 15th, 08, 6:05 PM That Motor would look great with a Custom Aluminum 1, 2, 3, or 4 Piece Firewall. Maybe some Custom Aluminum Front Inner Fenderwells?

chev789 Jun 11th, 10, 1:51 PM haneline dash with their electronic gauge pack
john 67 Jun 16th, 10, 10:29 PM Some pics of my 67 dash . Haneline panel powdercoated with autometer sport comp ll guages, vintage air ac vents , vintage air controller mounted in old controller location , radio and glove box trim pieces painted black, small console between center console and dash for extra power outlets speakers and a place for suction cup mount for sat. radio, kick panels also have power outlets where vent knobs used to be, good for windshield navagation ( ran cable along top of dash and down to kick panel outlet ) Hane line panel was a bit of a pain to install, had to install panel into dash then guages into panel, larger guages were real tight where the guage bezel is near the top of dash. I thought I could mount all guages in the panel and then mount them into dash but all the angles of the 67 dash did not allow that to happen .retro sounds radio .JOHN
