I had a roof and quarter's put on my Elky last year. They primered the hole car except the roof. Now it's starting to get surface rust on it. What should I use to clean it up so I can put some temporary primer on it. I thought just a wire wheel in a drill. Will that scratch the metal too much. Any tips.

I suppose the primered car sat outside? You're going to have to remove ALL of the rust. That entails sanding all of the primer off and mechanically removing the rust. No magic stuff in a bottle either. Once the rust is removed and you have clean metal again, use a self-etching primer followed with some good urethane primer on top. One of primer's primary function's is to absorb, and it does. Water included. primer isn't a protectant, paint is. Unless you weant to do this every year I recommend you apply some paint on it.

Thanks for the reply Jimmy. No, the car did not sit outside. It was in my junked up garage cover with junk where I really didn't pay attention to it. I know I should be horse whipped for neglecting my baby for a year,,,,but anyway. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif
As you can see by the pics below, the rest of the car is fine.(I hope) When I picked the car up from the body shop, the replacement fender I gave him to put on was in the back. He just patched the rusted one. For this reason, and others, the car will not be going back to him to be finished. I want the car completly stripped down to bare metal. God only knows what I will find.
Anyway, I'm just trying to clean up the roof for now. What grit paper should I use. Could I use a wire wheel in the window channel.
They did primer the inside of the roof. What would be the proper paint to seal it with. Or should I remove that primer as well, and redo it.
Also, take a look at the gas tank door. Do all after market quarters fit like that. Seems like he should have checked the fit first. Now thats going to have to be filled in with bond I guess. Is that something that is common.

I'd probably hit the whole area with a 3M Clean-n-Strip disc. They look like a black rice cake sold at good hardware tool stores or your local autobody supply store. I use a product that I found over at http://www.autobodystore.com called ras-o-nil http://www.rassonil.com/. It converts rust and so far I'm happy with the results. Then you could lay down some etching primer or DP. Good luck,

Use a DA sander with 80 grit paper to remove rust. If that dosn't do it, go to 36 grit for the tough spots, but not all over. Yes you can use a wire brush on a drill motor or whatever on the window channels. Do a search in the Body Shop on; RUST; PRIMER; SANDING. There's a lot of great info on this site. The Search function is a great tool.
The gas door looks ugly, but it's hard to give advice with that picture. Do you have another?

Use a da sander with 80 grit use 36 grit on the toguher spots, then once done go over it with 180 grit. Use a self etching primer NOT EXPOY, the self etching is a much better rust fighter then expoy. Use something like Duponts variprime or PPG dx1791, both great self etching primers. Once you have the roof covered with the self etch I would at least put one coat of 2K urethane primer on it. The self etch is not meant as a stand alone primer so it needs to be covered with something if its going to sit for awhile...Eric
Looking at the side 2 pic I noticed that the door handle and lock was still on the door my question is why not remove them? It would be much easier to sand the door and get it straight without them in the way and in the long run have a better end result. Just a pet peeve to see things masked off when they should be removed.
