I'm planning on rechroming the rear bumper on my '70. Can the S.S. bumper pad be saved and reused or is it a given to get a new one?

Rick,if it's in good shape,I'd reuse it.3M Black super weather strip adhesive will re-attach it with great results.

Rick,

Mine is original, it was removed and replaced after the bumber was rechromed.

Not sure what was used, but it's holding on very well.

Just make sure to get the old glue off the pad. I used hot water to soften up the glue on mine(not original. Other than that just make sure to scuff the chrome under the pad so the glue can grab. I second the weatherstrip adhesive.. it works good.
Good luck

I just got done installing a pad on my '70's bumper, thought I would share my experience to help any of you all out.

First, I laid the pad down on the bumper, got it aligned right, and outlined it with a Sharpie permanent marker on the bumper so I knew where to scuff the chrome. Used a blue Scotchbrite disc on a drill to scuff the bumper, worked great. Also scuffed the back of the rubber pad with the disc. Wiped down everything with Prep-Sol to make sure it was clean. I put a thin coat of Super Weatherstrip Adhesive on the back of the pad and on the bumper itself, about 1/8" or so beyond the lines I scribed, to make sure the entire surface area of the pad was glued. Waited for the adhesive to dry, and put one more thin coat on the back of the pad, very quickly, and stuck the pad on the bumper. Clamped the pad to the bumper using some 3X6 strips of 1"-thick oak and racheting woodworking clamps. Make sure the pad stays oriented properly when you're clamping because it will bend near the top to conform to the bend in the bumper.
I kept the clamps on for two days, removed them, and got the excess glue off with 3M General Adhesive Remover. Everything looks perfect, don't think the pad is coming off anytime soon. Hope this helps someone...

Tony, great advice http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gifI hated to scuff my replated bumper, but it's not like there will never be an SS pad on it! The 3M Black Super weather strip adhesive worked better than the glue that came with the pad,for sure.
