: How can I remove the undercoating?

Hi all,

There is some rust under my '68's tar undercoating and I really want to strip it and start clean, without removing the frame. What is the best way to remove the tar?

It turns out that sandblasting places do not want to do it as the tar messes up their material. Would high pressure water remove it?

Any help would be appreciated,
Theo.

Theo, I removed mine with a heat gun and a scraper, then I washed the the film that was left off with mineral sprits, where a full face shield do a little each night it should take a couple of weeks, it is not a bad job it is easier if you have the body off but it can be done with the body on, Marty

Theo, I don't really know of an easy way.The only way I know of is to use a scraper. Most of the time the old undercoating is brittle and will chip off. Can use a heat gun or hair dryer to soften it,sometimes makes it easier. There are some chemicals you can use also.Prepsol will help get the residue off after scraping.I think Eastwood sells a kit for this also. It's a messy, pain in the neck job! :( Hope someone has a better way.....Jim :D
Lemont beat me to it,I type too slow

the undercoating is oil based, i had great success using a heat gun, scraper, and then wiping down the remainder with paint thinner. I did the same with the interior getting rid of the sound deadner. it does take some time and elbow grease. personally it was worth the time. bruce :D

i got in there with a drill that had a wire brush on the end. it works pretty good. i used a dust mask and a pair of sfaty glasses and it took about a week. it makes a mess but i moved the car and swept it up. while doing this be careful because the wire brush will kick back and hurt you. i cut my knuckles a couple of times hitting sharp edges. so keep a good grip on that thing.

Thanks guys. I have a heat gun and I'll give it a try. I will also try a pressure washer to see if it does anything. I also think that this job will be worth the trouble... I like things clean. It is makes it much easier to find problems later on.

What did you use for a paint after the undercoating was off? Should I use POR-15 anti-rust and then frame paint (or whatever it is called)?

Theo. WE just did the underside of Alans car a couple of weeks back and used sandable primer, wet sanded the underside after degrease and went over it with eastwoods underhood black after that. Came out mint, IMO....wet sanding made a big difference, smoooooooooooth as glass on the pans now. Looks great.

I've been using kerosene. Let it soak to soften up the coating and scrape off. PB blaster penetrant seems good too, but too expensive for this application. I believe any oil based solvent as bruce mentioned would help.

A hand held torch and a scraper will make quick work of it.But dont do it if you have been using krosine or something else flamable.
