: Underbody questions
smithyjc May 27th, 01, 4:28 PM I have been planning to finish the underbody of my 65 by spraying it with Zero Rust paint, then 3M brushable seam sealer on all the seams, followed by Eastwoods Black Undercoating. Now I'm hearing that 3M brushable seam sealers crack over time as does the black undercoating. What are the rest of you involved in full frame off restos doing to finish your underbodys?

normie May 27th, 01, 7:41 PM I plan on using the "Spray On Truck Bed liner" after I POR and prime the underside.. However, some more knowledgeable advise will come from the others.. Good Luck!
chevymad May 27th, 01, 9:15 PM I used spray on liner on both the inside and outside of the cars bottom. Turned out real well. Wouldnt be for a show restore but looks good and is real tough.
smithyjc May 28th, 01, 7:13 AM What spray on liner did you use? How much did it take to do the job? Cost?

chevymad May 28th, 01, 11:08 AM I used duraliner. It took a gallon for each side of the floor. Sells retail for about $50 a gallon. Helps to get a store discount! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Oh and i bought the sprayer kit for another $50. Figured i might spray my truck bed too. Much easier than rollin it on. Amazing how fast this stuff dries. Figured i'd be covered in it, but even when i bumped my head on the floor it didnt stick in my hair.

Jblack May 29th, 01, 7:19 AM Don't undercoat it!!! You've gone to great pains doing the rest of your car. Do the bottom side as well. I re-did my floor pans, gas tank, etc., while it was still on the frame..can you say neck and back pain? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif I wanted to just undercoat and be done with it, but my friend talked me into doing it right. I'm glad I listened to him http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif I cleaned it, sanded it, primed, sanded again, and sprayed it with a Satin Black enamel. Looks awesome. I hope to get some pics soon on my webpage of it.
Take the time and sand/prime/paint. It looks 100% better http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Plus anytime I see undercoating sprayed all over I wonder whats being hidden????

71307chevelle May 29th, 01, 7:43 AM Gotta agree with Jblack...unless its a daily driver that will see rain, salt, etc, you spend so much time scraping the old undercoating off, fixing rust, sanding, primering, why hide it with ugly looking undercoating?
I plan on painting mine body color instead of the black, I think thats what the factory did originally, at least thats what under all the undercoating on mine.

smithyjc May 29th, 01, 1:08 PM With no undercoating what did you use to keep the road and tire noise down? Did you still seal all the welding seams prior to paint,if so what did you use?
Jblack May 30th, 01, 7:55 AM 2 chamber Flows take care of road and tire noise http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Seriously...I used "seam sealer" body caulk where needed and I am using the factory sound deadener (get it through your favorite dealer, Ground Up, NPD,etc..) under the carpet.
My car isn't a daily driver so water isn't an issue either.....

70Elky396 May 30th, 01, 9:30 AM I sandblasted the bottom, sprayed 2 coats of POR 15, and a final coat of black acrylic enamel. I never want to go thru that again, but the effort was worth it. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/70elky%20bottom
