68 Velle SS..

Currently in paint and fighting off the pressure of my family to go with the racing stripes on hood/trunk I love that look although I would rather stay correct for the 68SS. I was looking for opinions about if I should have them painted on or go with the decal kit, and who provides the best decal kit for the 68SS? Thanks

I would paint them on. It shouldn't be that big of a deal to tape off the appropriate area.

it's your car! if you do what makes others happy you will never be happy yourself, and yes this is about your stipe issue.decals are not for ricers, but are what gm used in the (i know for a fact) on 70-72 chevelles. i would paint, becouse if you sticker it will leave an edge. if you paint the edge can be sanded out. for you paint guys i know if you put enough clear over stickers you will never feel the edge. i also know if you go that way your clear will spider (you know those cracks in the paint/clear).

i'm not sure they even make decal SS (hood and deck) stripes for a 68, since the originals never had them...however i see stencils & stripes make a stencil kit (just because they're so popular, i suppose) for 68-69, that would be the way to go, btw, there were plenty of muscle cars originally equipped with decals...think "GTO judge" or most any hemi car (or any mopar muscle car for that matter) after 69...and, i believe all heavy chevy chevelle graphics were decals..i see now that apparently 68 chevelle ss body stripes were also?

Ya I have looked at the the kits, the body stripes is the way to go for my year.. Of course I get the same reaction out of the wife and the rest of the family about it being my car and to go with the hood/deck stripes. I am battling it atm.. Although in my thinking due to my love of the racing stripes that means that I need not only my 68 but a nice 70 to go along with it :)I generally keep my hands off of others cars although I did slide across some decals and I do think paint is the way to go.. Now just have to decide if its going orig body or the racing.. Wife probably wont like having to sell the house to build another one just so I can have the stripes yet if we have two we will both have a place to go after the fight! Thanks for the opinions all

I would go with paint, longer lasting than decals.

I've had 70 strips painted on my 69 for about 30 years I even remember peeling off the side stripes.
On this rebuild I'm using ghost strips.
Like they said it's your car do it the way you would like it the most there is no rule that says they have to be exactly the way they came even then I would'nt do it.
check this out (it's real dusty right now)
