So I am looking at my mangled dash and tracing wires and it got me thinking. Something just isn't right.

I have a few wire connections that end in plugs meant for what I assume are the guages based on the wiring diagram, the others I am not so sure. but instead of going to something in the dash, they are connected to matching plugs that go behind the caqrpeting on the firewall and out to where the console should be.

The one wire that I was able to trace so far goes from the gas tank (brown) then to the dash and meats up with the pink wire as in the diagram. but then they go to where the console should be. Totally confusing.

Now I am starting to think that maybe this car was originally a column shifter and he changed it to a floor shifter. that would explain the whole he cut in the floor board.

Or perhaps he bought a dash harness for a column shifter by mistake and had to extend the wires.

Could it be that this was originally not an SS and was a column shifter and I have been had?

Or am I being paranoid?

There were SS car with columm shift. Some people prefer floor shift and move them. :)

Given everything that has happened - and that you are only just beginning on your Chevelle adventure - you have every reason to be paranoid. Although it is unwarranted.

As you have now found out, a '65 SS could be had with a column shifter. Didn't your vin translate to originally being a six cylinder SS? Maybe that was another '65 that you didn't buy, I'm not sure. In '65 the SS was a trim option vs. the high performance designation that it became from '66 and up.

When you buy somebody's old hot rod you also buy their mistakes, and their imperfect ways of making do with what was there.

The time you spend sorting it out can be full of tedious tasks and interesting discoveries. In the end you will know that it was done right if you correct all the boo boos.

There are many booboos I have found so far. And I expect that I will find many more. I would consider how I got it ameteur hour. I am new to all this so it will definately be an interesting ride to say the least. But as I slowly make things work, I plan on doing it the right way. it will be no show car that's for sure (at least not for a while), but it will be a safe, comfortable, fun and sharp daily driver by the time I am done.
