I was wondering if anyone has tried to blend in the upper fender mounts on fire wall on a 68 chevelle. i am in process of smoothing fire wall and i think it would look good if they were blended in. instead of just sitting flush on the fire wall surface. here is what im thinking...
I was gonig to try to grind down the the edges of the metal, to make it thinner and then mig weld those edges , so it will blend into the firewall with less filler. what do you guys think of my idea?? also should i use a strong metalic type body filler in this area? thanks ED

it would just be blended at the base of the mount
the part where the fender meets is like 1.5 inches tall from the fire wall. so i wouldnt have any problems adjusting.its the mounting above the heater core on pass side and right next to the power brake booster on the driver side. have you done any thing simular to this? any pics? thanks

Don't weld your fender to the firewall. For the small cosmetic benefit the ability to remove or adjust the fender would be gone. JMO

Ahhh, Now I see. Yes I would do exactly as you described. Grind the edges till they are close to the firrewall surface then weld and grind. I would use Everglass filler or lead this in.

Just got done doing exactly that on our '70.
It came out pretty well grinding down the edges and then filling them. I also went thru and filled all the dimples and knocked down the bumps on the rest of the firewall too. It's all primered and the mounts look a heckuva lot better than it did before.
Problem is... I want to paint it RIGHT NOW!!!
