What am I missing. I ordered stencils and wheel paint from Ausley's. I got argent and charcoal-no black. Aren't the 70's also black centered? If so is it semi ? Thanks.

Black is not correct. Most of the repro wheels come with black, and a lot a people paint them black, but charcoal is correct for the 69-70 SS wheel.

No, the factory wheels where charcoal grey not black. Most people like the black look better and when they repaint this is what you see. The 71/72 ss wheels were black but the 69/70 ss wheels from the factory were not black. It doesn't help that all the reproductions are incorrectly black. I don't know why they do this. I bought by 70 in 1976 and the original ss wheels were definately charcoal grey. I had a hard time finding off the shelf paint to match. In that era true magnesium wheels were available and I think they tried to immitate that color.

Thanks fellas/
I am truly amazed as it seems everything is black. So then the wheels are silver with indentions gray.. or opposite. I have never really been into 70's till now. Always loved 65's and been hunting one. But they are "scarce as hensteeth". Thanks so MUCH!

Just to add some fuel to the fire.
I was at a chevelle convetion and seen an NOS wheel in the box dated in 69 and it was defintely black.
It is speculated that the wheel was painted argent color first then inserts where painted a couple of light coats of black and over time the black faded and the silver started to show thru causing the charcoal shade. At least that's my story http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif Jim

I always thought the silver too. My originals are faded though so perhaps it was like Fairchild says. I have never heard that theory before but I have heard complaints to manuf. about being black. Interesting, if it was definitely NOS. When new they look pretty dark but still not black if you look in direct light. I looked at a highly documented 70 LS6, 29,000 mile car and they were the argent color but I suppose they could have been switched also.

Im still PO'd the NOBODY makes a 15x10 trim ring for the repo's

I think you wife has great tast in color selection. I'll be happy to take her for a ride in my 69' Cortez Silver SS. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Also about 15 years ago I had a paint shop polish up the "Gray" on an original unrestored SS wheel. Then I took it to a paint shop who matched the color. Out of 6 original wheels, I have never seen black on them. This particular gray is very tough to color match. Last time I wanted a batch mixed up from the formula 15 years ago, one of the base colors used was no longer available. The paint supplier took an extra day to play with the tint.
