I have stripped a stud in the rear axle. Moser axle. What is the best method of removing the old stud and installing a new one?

If they are pressed in studs remove the wheel and brake drum, and simply tap it out of the axle. to install place the new stud in the axle ,stack some washers onto the stud followed by a nut and "draw" the stud into the axle until it is seated fully.

Does the axle need to be pulled to do this best or is it OK to leave in the housing?

If it's a standard length, pressed stud it can be replaced with the axle in place. Just drive the old one out and pull the new one in place with a lugnut (upside down).
If it's a threaded or long stud, you'll have to pull the axle.

Lugnut upside down? Does that mean on backwards, I assume it does. The flat side in toward the axle.

Yes, this way you can use the lugnut to draw the new stud's knurling into the axle flange without the lugnut's taper digging into the axle flange. Place a 7/16" or 1/2" washer under the upside down lugnut.
Works really well if you have an impact gun.
