A buddy of mine asked me to help him install a new tail gate and lift gate on his 57. I need to paint the parts and he had the car painted a couple of years ago with single stage paint. I've never played with single stage... It doesn't seem as shiny as CC... what do you guys suggest? Could I used BC with some kind of a less shiny CC or would I be better off getting the single stage and using it.
If so.... give me some single stage pointers please.
TIA

YES smile.gif
Could the reason it doesnt look as shiny as CC because its enamel paint instead of SS urethane?
Id go with Baseclear, you know the system. Plus its more user friendly

is it a solid or metalic color? I would shy away from the single stage metalics. solid colors are easily repaired

Wow Dean, that looks pretty good, a bit too dark for me though. I'm leaning towards the Galaxy Silver from GM, PPG code 5451. I looked at the Mercedes silver and it looks very much like the Cortez Silver. I'm leaning towards the Galaxy Silver from the Gen., PPG code 5451.

Rick, if it was just painted a few year ago, maybe you could get the paint code and brand it was shot. The chances of getting a color match would be greatly improved.
The color match is going to be your greatest hurdle. SS to BC/CC is going to be a toughy. They are just two differnt animals. The BC formula is not as simple as the same but you add clear over it. It is a completly different forumla in most cases.
If you can take a piece of the car for hand matching, it may be close enough.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've got more info. The stuff he used is spies hecker Acrylic Urethane 257 2 k acrylic system. He found the remainder of the can the guy gave him. About a pint left in it.
Any comments on this stuff, and advice? Do I use a catalyst with this or a reducer?????? I've never done single stage. Would I use the same gun pressure, tip size as BC CC?

Spies Hecker is basically the same as Standox, our single stage mixes 2 parts paint, 1 part hardner and 10% reducer.Find somebody that sells it in your area and if ya need more use the new stuff for the first couple coats and then spray the old stuff over it to achieve the color match. Mike
